Maria de Buenos Aires is the New World, new music, tango nuevo and a new type of opera - tango operita , whose musical basis is the insane rhythm and mood of tango, a dance born on the south-eastern coast of Latin America. Argentine folk tango has its bard, Astor Piazzolla, a composer-poet, who created a new style of presentation of this passionate dance, drawing inspiration from Stravinsky, Bartók and classical musical forms, but also jazz and electronic rock - he raised the tango to the rank of musical art.

He came from the vicinity of Buenos Aires, from Mar del Plata, a few hundred kilometers from the Argentine capital. In 1925, he moved with his family to New York, where he learned to play the bandoneon. In 1934 he appeared alongside the singer Carlos Gardel in the film El Día que me quieras , important for the history of tango . Upon his return to Poland, he played the bandoneon in orchestras in Mar del Plata and Buenos Aires. Later, an important turning point in his life took place - he began to compose. After studying composition with Alberto Ginastera, he founded his own music group, for which he began to write tango. First prize in a composition competition for  the Symphony "Buenos Aires"enabled him to go to Paris and continue his studies with Nadia Boulanger, the doyen of musical neoclassicism, who raised a whole generation of European composers. The 1960s and 1970s were for Astor Piazzolla a time of synthesizing tango with jazz and rock, contact with the creative ferment of New York, setting up new bands with which Sextet performed and recorded until 1990. The ennoblement for Piazzolla was the fact that from the end of the 1980s his compositions were included in their repertoire by famous virtuosos, e.g. violinist Gidon Kremer, pianist Emanuel Ax, cellists Yo-Yo-Ma and Mstisław Rostropowicz, whom the Argentine dedicated to Le Grand Tango .

Maria de Buenos Aires (1968) was the fulfillment of Piazzolla's artistic aspirations. He combined opera theater with dance, which was not new in the history of opera, but classical ballet was replaced by tango. The title Maria was for the composer an allegory of his beloved city. Beautiful and cursed, born "on the day when God lay drunk", the girl breaks out of poverty and family pathology for the longed-for freedom. Seduced by the rhythm of the tango, she plunges into the bowels of a big city, becomes a prostitute, learns what sex and crime is, and finally is killed herself by a crowd of street urchins, gangsters and brothel matrons. Maria, however, gains a second life as her own shadow wandering through the streets of the metropolis. Maria de Buenos Aires to Nowy Świat, nowa muzyka, tango nuevo i nowy typ opery – tango operita, dla której muzyczną podstawą jest obłędny rytm i nastrój tanga, tańca narodzonego na południowo-wschodnim wybrzeżu Ameryki Łacińskiej. Ludowe tango argentino doczekało się swego barda, Astora Piazzolli, kompozytora-poetyę, który stworzył nowy styl prezentacji tego namiętnego tańca, czerpiąc inspirację ze Strawińskiego, Bartóka i klasycznych form muzycznych, ale też jazzu i elektronicznego rocka – podniósł tango do rangi sztuki muzycznej.

Pochodził z okolic Buenos Aires, z Mar del Plata oddalonego o kilkaset kilometrów od stolicy Argentyny. W 1925 roku przeniósł się z rodziną do Nowego Jorku, gdzie uczył się grać na bandoneonie. W 1934 roku wystąpił u boku śpiewaka Carlosa Gardela w ważnym dla historii tanga filmie El día que me quieras. Wróciwszy do kraju, grał na bandoneonie w orkiestrach w Mar del Plata i Buenos Aires. Później nastąpił ważny zwrot w jego życiu – zaczął komponować. Po studiach kompozytorskich u Alberto Ginastery, założył własny zespół muzyczny, dla którego zaczął pisać tanga. Pierwsza nagroda w konkursie kompozytorskim za Sinfonię Buenos Aires umożliwiła mu wyjazd do Paryża i kontynuowanie studiów u Nadii Boulanger, nestorki muzycznego neoklasycyzmu, która wychowała całe pokolenie kompozytorów europejskich. Lata 60. i 70. XX wieku były dla Astora Piazzolli czasem syntezowania tanga z jazzem i rockiem, kontaktu z twórczym fermentem Nowego Jorku, zakładania kolejnych zespołów, z których Sekstet występował i nagrywał do 1990 roku. Nobilitacją dla Piazzolli stał się fakt, że od końca lat 80. jego kompozycje zaczęli włączać do swojego repertuaru znani wirtuozi, m. in. skrzypek Gidon Kremer, pianista Emanuel Ax, wiolonczeliści Yo-Yo-Ma i Mścisław Rostropowicz, któremu Argentyńczyk dedykował Le Grand Tango.

Maria de Buenos Aires (1968) była spełnieniem dążeń artystycznych Piazzolli. Połączył teatr operowy z tańcem, co w historii opery nie było wprawdzie nowe, jednak balet klasyczny zastąpiło u niego tango. Tytułowa Maria była dla kompozytora alegorią ukochanego miasta. Piękna i przeklęta, urodzona „w dniu, gdy Pan Bóg leżał pijany” dziewczyna wyrywa się z biedy i rodzinnej patologii na upragnioną wolność. Uwiedziona rytmem tanga, zanurza się w trzewia wielkiego miasta, zostaje prostytutką, poznaje co to seks i zbrodnia, w końcu sama zostaje zabita przez zgraję uliczników, gangsterów i burdelowych matron. Maria zyskuje jednak drugie życie jako własny cień wędrujący po ulicach metropolii. Marię de Buenos Aires reżyseruje Wojciech Faruga, dyrektor artystyczny Teatru Polskiego w Bydgoszczy, wcześniej szef Międzynarodowego Festiwalu Teatrów dla Dzieci i Młodzieży „Korczak”.
