2The vocal star of the evening, however, was septuagenarian Rosalind Plowright, whose commanding presence as the Old Baroness dominated the stage, combining moral rectitude and practicality in her shrewd advice and punishing judgment.
The singers — Christian Miedl playing the Vicomte de Valmont and Adrian Angelico playing the Marquise de Merteuil — were superb. [...] Miedl, a German native, sang with dramatic gusto without compromising his fine tone. He, too, had to maneuver through a demanding vocal part that kept him mostly in desperate argument mode. [...] Angelico and Miedl were in total command of this excruciatingly difficult material, replete with charged sexual innuendo. They were the leaders everyone else on stage followed. They were expressive both vocally and physically, credible maniacs set on destruction.
