A comedy in the style of Italian opera buffa with many amorous entanglements against a historical background: King Stanislaus of Poland is actually supposed to be the best man at a double wedding in France. But he has to travel secretly back to Poland for political reasons. So he asks his friend Belfiore to act as King Stanislaus. No one must know of the deception until Stanislaus has arrived in Poland! So Belfiore has to watch how the wedding of his lover with another admirer is being prepared, but finally he is allowed to reveal himself - a happy ending with a double wedding.

"Un giorno di regno, ossia Il finto Stanislao" (King for a day, or: The wrong Stanislaus) was premiered in 1840 at the Milan Scala - without success, but that soon changed, and to this day opera lovers all over the world appreciate the beautiful, fresh melodies of mistaken identity.


A double wedding is being prepared at Kelbar Castle in France: Giulietta, the young daughter of the Baron von Kelbar, is to marry the old treasurer La Rocca, and the beautiful Marchesa del Poggio wants to marry the commander, Count Ivrea.

Actually, the Polish King Stanislaus was supposed to take part in the celebrations as best man. But he had to travel secretly back to Poland for political reasons. So he asks his friend Belfiore to appear as Polish king at Kelbar Castle. No one must know of the deception until Stanislaus has arrived in Poland!

But Giulietta loves Edoardo, the treasurer's penniless nephew. Desperate about Giulietta's engagement to his uncle, Edoardo wants to go to Poland with Belfiore as a soldier. Belfiore uses his prestige as a sovereign and intervenes: he promises the old treasurer a ministerial post in Poland and a rich Polish princess as his bride; the treasurer immediately agrees and breaks off the engagement to Giulietta. The Baron is very angry about this, but Belfiore orders things to be decided alone.

The Marchesa del Poggio is Belfiore's mistress. She doesn't know anything about his secret task and feels neglected. Therefore she pretends to marry Count Ivrea; but in truth, their goal is to win back Belfiore. Belfiore is not allowed to reveal himself to her either, and writes a letter to the king asking him to free him from his job as the fake Stanislaus, otherwise he will lose his beloved. To buy time, Belfiore asks Count Ivrea to accompany him on a secret mission.

Then Belfiore orders the treasurer to bequeath a country estate to his nephew Edoardo. He persuades the Baron of Kelbar to consent to the marriage of Giulietta and Edoardo.

Finally a letter arrives from the real King Stanislaus: he has arrived in Poland and Belfiore is allowed to identify himself. Now there really is a double wedding at Kelbar Castle: Giulietta with Edoardo, the Marchesa with Belfiore.
