Opening the Danubian trilogy is the most gypsy of operettas. Zigana for the subject, which revolves around the events of the rich Countess Maritza, besieged by suitors, of her administrator, Count Tassilo, on the verge of ruin but intent on restoring the dowry of her sister, and of the inevitable gypsy , Manja. Zigana for the captivating score in which elements of Magyar and precisely zigana folk music emerge (in the first place the pressing rhythms of the csárda) and for the setting, a possession on the border between Hungary and Bulgaria.
Represented for the first time in 1924, arousing the enthusiasm of the public (but also that of Toscanini who praised the refined orchestration), it has then kept intact over time the suggestion of Magyar atmospheres unknowingly tinged with the new rhythms of Gershwin that the author he had as a friend in Vienna.
