L’Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia e Antonio Pappano sono i protagonisti dell’attesissimo concerto finale del Festival dei Due Mondi. Spoleto 66 si chiude con due capolavori di Gustav Mahler, compositore forse più di ogni altro capace di renderci partecipi, nella sua musica, dell’immensità del mondo che ci circonda.

 

Scrivendo i quattro Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen e la Sinfonia n. 1 Mahler si accorge dell’importanza che aveva per lui il rapporto tra uomo e natura. La sua Natura è estatica e terrificante, è un labirinto che risuona di voci segrete in cui l’animo umano si specchia in tutta la sua inconoscibilità.

Dei Lieder Mahler scrive anche il testo: un giovane inizia a camminare, senza sapere cosa sta cercando, spinto solo da un tormento interiore. La natura che lo circonda è l’unica interlocutrice possibile per il suo dolore rassegnato, la sentiamo rispondere nel richiamo del cuculo, nel saluto del fringuello e della campanula, cui danno voce gli strumenti dell’orchestra.

 

La Sinfonia prosegue il viaggio intrapreso con i Lieder, al punto da prenderne in prestito alcune melodie. Il primo movimento, che in una delle versioni portava il titolo “Primavera senza fine”, si apre con le voci della natura.  «Con il primo suono – disse Mahier alla violista Natalie Bauer-Lechner – il lungo “la” degli archi con armonici, siamo in mezzo alla natura: nel bosco, dove la luce del sole estivo scintilla, tremolando tra i rami».  In questo bosco rimaniamo incantati a osservare lo svolgersi di tutta la Sinfonia. A un certo punto da lontano vediamo avvicinarsi un fantastico corteo: lepri, volpi, cervi e caprioli danzano scortando in mezzo a loro il corpo di un cacciatore morto. Sembra che sia stata proprio l’incisione di Moritz von Schwind “Funerale del cacciatore”, popolare illustrazione della letteratura tedesca dell’infanzia, a dare a Mahler l’idea per la Marcia del terzo movimento. I contrabbassi intonano la melodia di “Fra martino” – resa funebre e grottesca dal cambio di tonalità – per accompagnare il cammino di questi animali, un po’ lieti e un po’ tristi, quasi umani.

The Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and Antonio Pappano are the protagonists of the highly anticipated final concert of the Festival dei Due Mondi. Spoleto 66 closes with two masterpieces by Gustav Mahler, a composer perhaps more than any other capable of making us participate, in his music, in the immensity of the world around us.

 

Writing the four Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and the Symphony n. 1 Mahler realizes the importance that the relationship between man and nature had for him. His Nature is ecstatic and terrifying, it is a labyrinth that resounds with secret voices in which the human soul is reflected in all its unknowability.

Of the Lieder Mahler also writes the text: a young man begins to walk, without knowing what he is looking for, driven only by an inner torment. The nature that surrounds him is the only possible interlocutor for his resigned pain, we hear it respond in the call of the cuckoo, in the greeting of the chaffinch and the bluebell, to which the instruments of the orchestra give voice.

 

The Symphony continues the journey undertaken with the Lieder, to the point of borrowing some melodies. The first movement, which in one of the versions bore the title "Endless Spring", opens with the voices of nature. «With the first sound – Mahier told the violist Natalie Bauer-Lechner – the long “A” of the strings with harmonics, we are in the middle of nature: in the woods, where the light of the summer sun sparkles, flickering among the branches». In this wood we remain enchanted to observe the unfolding of the whole Symphony. At one point from a distance we see a fantastic procession approaching: hares, foxes, deer and roe deer dance, escorting the body of a dead hunter among them. It seems that it was Moritz von Schwind's engraving "Hunter's Funeral", a popular illustration from German children's literature, to give Mahler the idea for the March of the third movement. The double basses sing the melody of “Fra martino” – made funereal and grotesque by the change of key – to accompany the journey of these animals, a little happy and a little sad, almost human.
