Britten's first chamber opera from 1946 is based on a well-known episode from legendary early Roman history. Lucretia, the wife of the Roman general Collatinus, is known for her virtue. This appeals to Tarquinius, the son of the Etruscan king who rules over Rome. He thinks all women are fickle. When Lucretia persists, he rapes her, causing her to commit suicide.

Two commenting narrators try to use the events to explore how such atrocities can come about and how we humans can deal with them - at that time shortly after the end of the war particularly topical questions, but unfortunately not outdated to this day. With a conscious restriction to four female singers and twelve instruments, the composer creates a great opera with an amazing variety of sounds and moving expressiveness.

Brittens erste Kammeroper von 1946 beruht auf einer wohlbekannten Episode aus der sagenumwobenen römischen Frühgeschichte. Lucretia, die Frau des römischen Generals Collatinus, ist für ihre Tugendhaftigkeit bekannt. Das reizt Tarquinius, den Sohn des etruskischen Königs, der über Rom herrscht. Er hält alle Frauen für wankelmütig. Als Lucretia standhaft bleibt, vergewaltigt er sie, worauf sie Selbstmord begeht.

Zwei kommentierende ErzählerInnen versuchen anhand des Geschehens zu erkunden, wie es zu solchen Gräueltaten kommen kann und wie wir Menschen damit umgehen können – damals kurz nach Kriegsende besonders aktuelle, doch leider bis heute nicht veraltete Fragen. Bei bewusster Beschränkung auf vier Sängerinnen, vier Sänger und zwölf Instrumente schafft der Komponist große Oper von verblüffender Klangvielfalt und bewegender Ausdruckskraft.
