Benjamin Britten's first chamber opera "The Rape of Lucretia", premiered immediately after the Second World War, takes up the myth of the "desecration of Lucretia" depicted in the visual arts: Ancient Rome is ruled by the Etruscans, political chaos reigns, the only one Stability seems to be the beautiful and chaste Lucretia. The Etruscan prince Tarquinius gains access to her house at night and rapes her. Lucretia chooses suicide as the only way out, which in turn is used politically by the Romans to call for resistance.

The film and video director Sarah Derendinger, who was born in Lucerne and is internationally successful on major opera stages, questions the events in her production. Where do the two narrator characters manipulate the audience? How much attraction is there between Tarquinius and Lucretia? How can it be that Lucretia's death is immediately turned into a political weapon? With cinematic means, symbolic images and a live camera, the evening asks: "What is truth?"

Sarah Derendinger marks the beginning of a new series at the Luzerner Theater, in which a video artist will create an opera every year.
