“I want to honor your poor wife; you know, you are not promised a mouth first, only after the wedding, when I am your wife, then it must not be a pity, poor god.''

Hubička is the sixth opera by Bedřich Smetana. When the brilliant Czech composer wrote the work, he was already deaf. The plot is not complicated at all. A young widower with a child Lukáš is supposed to marry Vendulka, but both are stubborn. As soon as they meet, they argue about a kiss - Vendulka doesn't want to let her go before the wedding out of piety for the deceased. Lukáš furiantsky comes under Vendulča's window with girls to humiliate his love. In the end, however, he regrets his offense and apologizes to Vendulka. She forgives him and wants to shut him up, but this time Lukáš is the one who stands up. But in the end, they finally fall into each other's arms. Kissit is one of Smetana's most performed operas, it was presented in ten productions at the NDM alone. It was widely played during the occupation, when it helped maintain national consciousness with its "Czechness". When the Czech theaters were reopened after the war, the Ostrava troupe opened with this very opera on 19 May 1945 - and it was followed a few weeks later by The Bartered Bride .
 
The most recent staging of Smetana's Hubička , directed by Jiří Nekvasil, is part of the Smetana Opera Cycle 2024, a major project of the NDM, which will culminate in the jubilee year with a festive presentation of all eight of the composer's operas together with a number of accompanying events. In the spring of 2024, Ostrava will thus become a unique place for the meeting of domestic and foreign performers, experts and lovers of Smetana's music. The audience will have the opportunity to become familiar with those operas by Bedřich Smetana, which are not normally seen on stage today.

Hubička je v pořadí šestou operou Bedřicha Smetany. Když geniální český skladatel dílo psal, byl už hluchý. Děj není nikterak složitý. Mladý vdovec s dítětem Lukáš si má vzít Vendulku, ale oba jsou tvrdohlaví. Hned jak se setkají, pohádají se o hubičku – Vendulka ji z piety k nebožce nechce povolit před svatbou. Lukáš furiantsky přichází pod Vendulčina okna s děvčaty, aby svou milou ponížil. Nakonec však svého provinění lituje a Vendulku odprosí. Ta mu odpouští a chce mu dát hubičku, avšak tím, kdo si postaví hlavu, je tentokrát Lukáš. Nakonec si ale konečně padnou do náručí. Hubička patří k nejhranějším Smetanovým operám, jen v NDM byla uvedena v deseti nastudováních. Hojně byla hrána během okupace, kdy svou „českostí“ pomáhala udržovat národní vědomí. Když po válce byla česká divadla znovu otevřena, ostravský soubor zahájil 19. 5. 1945 právě touto operou – a po ní o několik týdnů následovala také Prodaná nevěsta.
 
Nejnovější nastudování Smetanovy Hubičky v režii Jiřího Nekvasila je součástí Smetanovského operního cyklu 2024, zásadního projektu NDM, který vyvrcholí v jubilejním roce slavnostní přehlídkou všech osmi skladatelových oper spolu s řadou doprovodných akcí. Ostrava se tak na jaře 2024 stane unikátním místem pro setkání domácích i zahraničních interpretů, odborníků a milovníků Smetanovy hudby. Diváci dostanou příležitost seznámit se i s těmi operami Bedřicha Smetany, které dnes na jevišti nejsou běžně k vidění.
