A bell in an unfinished temple, water as a symbol of purification, burning candles… Red eggs are distributed as a symbol of Easter. Suddenly, desperate voices come from a distance. In the transparent, almost dreamy images, a great drama begins to unfold about what is hidden in man.

Priest Grigoris convenes an assembly of elders in the village of Lycovrissi and selects Christ and apostles from among the villagers for the Passion Plays. The deep peace in which the village still lived is disturbed by a sudden concussion. Just as God's finger demands proof of faith, so do refugees come to the village square and seek asylum. They are rejected and forced to seek refuge in the rocky mountains. However, the newly appointed saints go after the fearing refugees. Ordinary daily worries gradually disappear; the strength of their faith and their role in the approaching passions are beginning to change their spiritual consciousness to new maturity. Gradually he returns to the only meaning of his actions: good or evil…

This is how Martinů characterized his last opera, the Greek Passion . The composer, who himself experienced the fate of a refugee, created in it the work of a great humanistic message about the power of faith. The message is increasingly relevant in today's world.
