Bedřich Smetana's seventh, penultimate completed opera is often referred to as his operatic masterpiece. After the extraordinary success of The Kiss, the composer had the libretto written by Eliška Krásnohorská, whose qualities Smetana never questioned. The librettist wrote for him the story of the Kalinas and Malinas, reminiscent of the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues. Unlike Romeo and Juliet, the story set in the romantic town of Bezděz ends well, although no secrets can be kept in a small town.
Smetana used the libretto as a canvas to portray the distinctive characters of the environment in which he lived. The motif of love blossoming into maturity after overcoming life's obstacles also appealed to him.

Tajemství vzešlo z pokračování tvořivé spolupráce Bedřicha Smetany s Eliškou Krásnohorskou. Po oslnivém úspěchu Hubičky ponechal skladatel volbu námětu i jeho zpracování na libretistce, jejímuž vkusu, uměleckým schopnostem a intuici plně důvěřoval. Krásnohorská napsala příběh Kalinů a Malinů vzdáleně upomínající na spor Kapuletů a Monteků. Na rozdíl od Romea a Julie ovšem příběh zasazený do prostředí romantického Bezdězu vonícího chmelem končí šťastně, i když v malém městečku se žádné tajemství neutají. Své postavy Smetana obdařil brilantní hudební charakteristikou a s nadhledem zkušeného dramatika a s obrovskou skladatelskou bravurou vytvořil operu, jež je právem považována za jeho největší operní skvost.
