Considered a jewel of 19th-century Polish opera, Stanislaw Moniuszko’s The Haunted Manor remains largely unknown abroad. Full of melodic inventiveness, bel canto inspiration and unique local colour, it certainly deserves a wider audience. After David Pountney’s production for Polish National Opera (streamed on our platform in 2015), Poznań Opera's resolutely modern production - directed by the winner of the European Opera Directing Prize Ilaria Lanzino - should help find more admirers for Moniuszko’s masterpiece.

SYNOPSIS | THE HAUNTED MANOR Moniuszko – Poznań Opera

How do you tell the story of 19th century cupids in the days of Tinder and social media? Can you reconcile attachment to tradition with the need for modernity? Are we able to change our beliefs in the name of love? The Haunted Manor  by Stanisław Moniuszko, the most important piece of the Polish opera repertoire, in an innovative and extremely up-to-date interpretation of Ilaria Lanzino. 

The performance of The Haunted Manor , enthusiastically received by the reviewers and the audience  performed by the artists of the Grand Theater in Poznań, it returns - this time to the MTP Hall. The staging of the performance first won the hearts of the jury of the international competition for opera directors, then the honorary patronage over the performance was assumed by Nicholas Payne, director of the Opera Europa Association. The reviewers unanimously wrote: “Revelation! I don't hesitate to use that word. (...) May it continue in the opera theater and also in the theater of our life ”[Piotr Nędzyński]. “The director made us realize that national sanctity from over 150 years ago can take on contemporary meanings. So instead of protecting national treasures from interference by the world, we should learn from those who are not afraid to entrust their most valuable works to foreigners ”[Jacek Marczyński, Rzeczpospolita].

Ilaria Lanzino draws handfuls from Polish culture, showing what is the best. It boldly refers to artistic works: in the set design of the performance, we will see inspirations by the works of Katarzyna Kobro, Natalia LL and Ewa Partum. About his  Haunted Manor the director says that this is a story about the de-radicalization of views and the destructive influence of war on the further lives of those affected by it. The main characters of Moniuszko's opera, Zbigniew and Stefan, battered by wartime experiences, decide never to start a family. The director believes that the oath taken by the brothers masks their helplessness and sensitivity. Lanzino argues that Moniuszko's work is not a collection of spectacular memorabilia of the past, but a work that fits perfectly into the present times, provides a field for creative interpretation, with clearly outlined characters and current pronunciation.

Leading singers associated with the Poznań scene take part in the performance, including: Ruslana Koval, Małgorzata Olejniczak-Worobiej, Magdalena Wilczyńska-Goś, Stanislav Kuflyuk, Piotr Kalina, Rafał Korpik, Albert Memeti and Szymon Kobyliński.
