In 1874, Georges Bizet chose as the plot for his new opera the novella "Carmen" by the French writer Prosper Mérimée (1803–1870). The libretto was composed by Henri Meilhac (1831–1897) and Ludovic Halevy (1834–1908), experienced librettists who wrote many of the texts of Jacques Offenbach's operettas. The libretto owns its long success to its vivid theatrical dramaturgy, which is the best basis for creating an opera piece.

Many elements of Mérimée's novella have been changed. The two main actors have been significantly altered. Don José - in the novella is a darkly engrossed romantic hero, and in the opera, he is presented as a naive village young man who has become a victim of his fatal love for the irresistible Carmen. Her image embodies the captivating feminine beauty, loving sensibility, and rebellious freedom-loving spirit of the desired, but strong and inaccessible woman. The hero of the novel Escamillo is built as a contrast-heroic image and captivatingly glamorous in his opposition to Don Jose. Unlike the novella, Micaela's image is also expanded and contrasted with Carmen's. In the music and the libretto of the opera, the romantic figures of the gypsy smugglers stand out, you can feel the tense atmosphere of the Spanish bullfight, the carefreeness and cheerfulness in the pub are captured, and the love between the characters moves to tears and touches the soul.

It is strange that the world premiere, which took place on March 3, 1875, in Paris, was a failure. Already at the general rehearsal in the hall of the Opera Comique, musicians and critics are present and give a negative assessment. "How true, but how indecent it all is!" - notes the criticism of "Carmen", and Bizet is accused of immorality. On October 23 of the same year, five months after the death of its author, "Carmen" is presented in Vienna with extraordinary success. Since then, she has not left the stages of opera houses all over the world.

The Bulgarian premiere is the work of the Opera Fellowship in Sofia on March 9, 1912. The conductor is Todor Khadzhiev from Ruse, and the director is Dragomir Kazakov.

In Rousse, "Carmen" is performed for the first time on January 16, 1958. The conductor is Romeo Raichev, and the staging team is from Bucharest - director - Ion Ranzescu, the artists are Teodor Surucanu and Lidia Jovanescu, and the choreographer is Asen Manolov.

"Carmen" is an extremely popular and beloved opera and is one of the most frequently performed in Bulgaria. The productions of "Carmen" created by the Ruse Opera have successfully gathered thousands of applauses during the tours of the Ruse artists in Spain, France, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland.

The performance in Paris in 1883 is a great success, Bizet's friend, the composer Ernest Giraud (1837–1892), created a new version of Carmen, replacing the spoken dialogues with recitatives and brilliantly embedding spectacular ballet music into the action. This edition of "Carmen" is also presented to the Bulgarian audience by the Rousse Opera House.

През 1874 година Жорж Бизе избира за сюжет за своята нова опера нашумялата по това време новела „Кармен“ на френския писател Проспер Мериме (1803–1870). Либретото съставят Анри Мейак (1831–1897) и Луи Алеви (1834–1908), опитни либретисти, автори на много от текстовете на оперетите на  Жак Офенбах. Либретото дължи успеха си на своята релефна и ярка театралната драматургия, която е най-добрата основа за създаване на оперно произведение. 

Много елементи от новелата на Мериме са изменени. Двете главни действащи лица са същесвено видоизменени. Дон Хозе – в новелата е мрачно вглъбен романтичен герой, а в операта е представен като наивен селски младеж, превърнал се в жертва на фаталната си любов към неустоимата Кармен. Нейният образ въплъщава завладяващата женската красота, любовната чувственост и непокорния свободолюбив дух на желаната, но силна и недостъпна жена. Героят от новелата Ескамилио е изграден като контрастно-героичен образ и покоряващо бляскав в противопоставянето си с  Дон Хозе. За разлика от новелата образът на Микаела е също така разширен и противопоставен на Кармен. В музиката и в либретото на операта изпъкват романтичните фигури на циганите-контрабандисти, чувства се напрегнатата атмосфера на испанската корида, завладяват безгрижността и веселието в кръчмата, до сълзи вълнува и  затрогва любовта на героите.

Странно е, че световната премиера, състояла се на 3 март 1875 година в Париж претърпява провал. Още на генералната репетиция в залата на Опера комик присъстват музиканти и критици, които дават отрицателна оценка. „Колко вярно, но колко неприлично е всичко!“ — отбелязва критиката за „Кармен“, а Бизе е обвинен в безнравственост. На 23 октомври през същата година, пет месеца след смъртта на автора ѝ, „Кармен“ е представена във Виена с изключителен успех. Оттогава тя не слиза от сцените на оперните театри в цял свят. 

Българска премиера е дело на Оперната дружба в София на 9 март 1912 година. Диригент е русенецът Тодор Хаджиев, а режисьор – Драгомир Казаков.

В Русе за първи път „Кармен“ е изнесена на  16 януари 1958 година. Диригент е Ромео Райчев, а постановъчният екип е от Букурещ – режисьор –  Йон Рънзеску, художници са Теодор Суручану и Лидия Йованеску, а хореограф е  Асен Манолов.

„Кармен“ е изключително популярна и обичана опера и е една от най-често поставяните в България. Постановките на „Кармен“, създадени от Русенската опера с успех са събирали хилядните аплаузи по време на гастролите на русенските артисти в Испания, Франция, Австрия, Германия и Швейцария.

За спектакъла, изнесен през 1883 година в Париж и преминал с изключителен успех, приятелят на Бизе, композиторът Ернест Гиро (1837–1892), създава нова редакция на „Кармен“ като заменя говорните диалози с речитативи и брилянтно инкрустира в действието ефектна балетна музика. Тази редакция на „Кармен“ представя и Русенската опера на българската публика.
