Defined by Gabriel Faurè as one of the most interesting and singular works on the musical panorama of the early twentieth century, Siberia by Umberto Giordano debuted at La Scala on 19 December 1903. On that same dreaded stage, a few years earlier, the composer from Foggia had earned the favor of the public with Andrea Chénier and now, having renewed his collaboration with Luigi Illica, he hoped to repeat that important success. The subject of Siberia is an original by Illica who was inspired by the great Russian literature, very fashionable at the time, and in particular by Resurrectionby Tolstoy. The protagonist of the story is the courtesan Stephana - woman, lover and heroine - as stated in the three acts into which the work is divided. The woman secretly loves the officer Vassili and when the latter is sentenced to hard labor for having wounded Stephana's lover in a duel, she joins him in Siberia, ready to share the rest of her days with him. But her fate is hostile to her until her end: joined by her old protector, the criminal Gleby, Stephana will be killed by the guards during an attempt to escape. Like Andrea Chénier and Fedora , also Siberia _it is a sentimental historical drama with veristic musical hues in which Giordano chooses to focus attention on the passionate element and on the environmental setting, skilfully rendered thanks to the use of traditional Slavic melodies and vibrant orchestral colours.

Definita da Gabriel Faurè una delle opere più interessanti e singolari del panorama musicale di inizio Novecento, Siberia di Umberto Giordano debutta alla Scala il 19 dicembre 1903. Su quello stesso temuto palcoscenico, pochi anni prima, il compositore foggiano si era guadagnato il favore del pubblico con Andrea Chénier ed ora, rinnovata la collaborazione con Luigi Illica, sperava di ripetere quell’importante successo. Il soggetto di Siberia è originale di Illica che si ispirò alla grande letteratura russa, di gran moda all’epoca, e in particolare a Resurrezione di Tolstoj. Protagonista della vicenda è la cortigiana Stephana - donna, amante ed eroina - come recitano i tre atti in cui è suddivisa l’opera. La donna ama segretamente l’ufficiale Vassili e quando quest’ultimo viene condannato ai lavori forzati, per aver ferito in duello il principe amante di Stephana, lei lo raggiunge in Siberia, pronta a condividere con lui il resto dei suoi giorni. Ma il destino le è ostile fino alla fine: raggiunta dal suo vecchio protettore, il criminale Gleby, Stephana verrà uccisa dalle guardie durante un tentativo di fuga. Come Andrea Chénier e Fedora, anche Siberia è un dramma storico sentimentale dalle tinte musicali veriste in cui Giordano sceglie di concentrare l’attenzione sull’elemento passionale e sulla cornice ambientale, restituita abilmente grazie all’impiego di melodie di tradizione slava e a colori orchestrali vibranti.
