The story of an attempted incarnation and a longing that is not fulfilled: the mermaid Rusalka longs to assume human form in order to be able to follow the beloved prince into his kingdom. Despite Aquarius' warnings, she wants to leave her natural world and gain a soul. To do this, she is not only prepared to leave everything behind, but also to accept the consequence that the witch Ježibaba told her: In the human world she must remain silent. With this, the water creature Rusalka not only robs himself of his actual element, but also of the possibility of conveying himself to the prince. From then on he sees her as a stranger, her embrace seems cold to him, and he soon succumbs to the seduction of another woman. The prince can only come into contact with the water mermaid's nature, which has remained alien to him, at the moment of his death - through Rusalka's kiss of death, with which she draws him into the water depths, only to remain behind as a lonely will-o'-the-wisp.

The natural world and human civilization remain irreconcilable: Rusalka's wish to experience human happiness at the side of the prince is just as little fulfilled as the prince's romantic desire for the natural world that he idealizes and that is unaffected by social interference. Antonín Dvořák's lyrical fairy tale, which premiered in Prague in 1901, is captivating - no matter how touching and pessimistic its plot may appear - with its captivating mood painting, its wealth of colorful melodies and its great dramatic effects. In addition, there are great, rewarding tasks for the vocal soloists in all vocal subjects. With »Rusalka«, by far his most successful opera, the musical master of the »Slavic Dances« and the symphony »From the New World« finally succeeded in demonstrating his great stage-dramatic impulse.
