The families of the Capulets and the Montagues fight each other in an ongoing feud. Nonetheless, Romeo from the Montague family and Juliet from the Capulet family meet at a party and fall in love. This is how fate takes its course, even a secret wedding cannot bind the lovers together permanently. The family feud escalates - in the end, Romeo and Juliet only find each other in death.

William Shakespeare's tragic lovers Romeo and Juliet are generally considered to be the most famous lovers in world literature, whose history has been updated in many ways in all the arts, in painting as well as in music, dance and film.

Bellini's bel canto opera “I Capuleti ei Montecchi”, Prokofiev's ballet “Romeo and Juliet” or Leonard Bernstein's musical “West Side Story” are just a few examples that have become extremely popular in musical theater. Charles Gounod's opera “Roméo et Juliette”, which in the French repertoire to this day outshines all previous and subsequent appropriations of the subject, definitely belongs in this series. In addition to "Faust" after Goethe, Gounod's other great literary opera, the Shakespeare opera performed in the Parisian “Théâtre Lyrique” in 1867 became the greatest success of the French composer, who was occasionally smiled at as a church musician among opera composers. The dramaturgy of the opera follows Shakespeare and yet takes on a very distinctive character:
