Créé en à Londres en 1725, Rodelinda est une pièce dramatique sur fonds de triangle amoureux, de deuil impossible, de rivalités sentimentales et politiques. Contenant l'une des plus belles panoplies d'airs de ce maître de l'opera seria qu'est Haendel, Rodelinda n'est pourtant pas qu'une suite de numéros de chant. Au contraire : les huit grands airs et le duo de Rodelinda sont le fruit d'une véritable progression dramatique et préfigurent l'entrée du théâtre musical dans le bel canto. Surtout, Rodelinda est l'une des grandes héroïnes haendeliennes : vraie-fausse veuve à la fidélité sans faille, rare égérie à l'opéra de l'amour conjugal et, tout comme Haendel, féministe avant l'heure.

C'est d'ailleurs à travers son regard que le metteur en scène Claus Guth a décidé de centrer son approche, dans le décor d'une vaste maison blanche vue tour à tour de l'intérieur et de l'extérieur, entre jeu de masques et voyeurisme. Comme un manège de tous les fantasmes passionnels possibles.

Created in London in 1725, Rodelinda is a dramatic piece set against a love triangle, impossible mourning, sentimental and political rivalries. Containing one of the finest panoply of arias by the master of opera seria, Handel, Rodelinda is not just a series of song numbers. On the contrary: the eight great airs and the duet of Rodelinda are the fruit of a real dramatic progression and prefigure the entry of musical theater into bel canto. Above all, Rodelinda is one of Handel's great heroines: a true-false widow with unfailing fidelity, a rare muse in the opera of conjugal love and, like Handel, a feminist before her time.

It is moreover through his gaze that the director Claus Guth decided to center his approach, in the setting of a vast white house seen alternately from inside and outside, between play of masks and voyeurism. Like a merry-go-round of all possible passionate fantasies.
