Doireann Ní Bhriain presents Robert O'Dwyer's Eithne live from the National Concert Hall, Dublin, a romantic adaptation of a mysterious ancient Irish legend, as the mortal son of Ireland's High King falls in love with the magical Eithne, daughter of the King of Tír na nÓg. 'This opera was completely forgotten until the score came out at an auction in 2002, where it was purchased by the National Library of Ireland,' says Irish Language Group Leader, Rónan Mac Con Iomaire. 'Little did you think at the time that such a large - scale opera, entirely through Irish, would be staged again and again, but it's great now that the public will have the opportunity to see the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in action. shown in the autumn. The cast also includes: Brendan Collins as Art, Eamonn Mulhallas as Neart, Imelda Drumm as Nuala, John Molloy as Guardian Spirit, Robert McAllister as King of Tír na nÓg, Rachel Croash as Una, Eohan Desmond as Feargus, Fearghal Curtis as Taoiseach, and Conor Breen as Herald. The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Fergus Sheil.

In 1909 Irish audiences were wowed by the premiere of a new opera, performed in the Irish language which took the stage by storm. Composed for the Oireachtas na Gaeilge festival of Irish culture at the Rotunda in Dublin (1909), Eithne is the first opera written and performed in the Irish language, and with the backing of patrons including Countess Markievicz, Dr. Douglas Hyde and Lady Gore-Booth, had a fully staged performance the following year at Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre.
 
It was played to great acclaim and it seemed that this opera would really secure Ireland’s mark on world of opera and the arts but timing was against it and in the turbulent years that followed in Ireland the opera didn’t get staged again and the orchestral score was lost.
 
Then in 2012 the orchestral score for Eithne reappeared in a private auction and it was purchased by the National Library where it is now housed. Finally, audiences will have the chance to hear this lost gem performed once more on an Irish stage. This will be a truly historical moment, when Ireland’s first romantic opera sung in the Irish language is brought back to life after over one hundred years of absence.

The music of Eithne is steeped in the late nineteenth century European operatic tradition with shades of Dvorák and Wagner infusing the score. Shimmering strings, hunting horns, luscious orchestrations with soaring vocal lines, rousing choruses and lyrical arias sit fascinatingly with the Irish language, which emerges as a highly suitable medium for operatic expression.
