A poor young woman, Vespetta, gets a job as a maid in the house of a wealthy citizen, Pimpinone. With meekness, charm and female cunning, she charms an old man who offers her a hand and a heart. But as soon as she becomes the legal wife of her master, Vespetta (whose name in translation means “little wasp”), she shows her true character: she travels to balls and shops, squanders money and treats the unfortunate spouse, taking possession of the house, keys and wallet, she subjugates herself and husband.

Pimpinone expresses dissatisfaction with his wife's behavior, but Vespetta reminds him that in the event of a divorce, she will receive all his wealth. The old man is compelled to reconcile.
