Une journée ordinaire, un terrible événement. À la mort de son nourrisson, une femme se met en quête du miracle qui lui rendra la vie. Tout ce qu’elle a à faire, en l’espace d’une journée, est de trouver un être humain authentiquement heureux. Mais alors que chaque rencontre, aussi prometteuse soit-elle, se solde par une déception, elle finit par se tourner vers la mystérieuse Zabelle, hôte et créatrice d’un jardin merveilleux. Onze ans après le succès historique de Written on Skin, George Benjamin revient au Festival pour un nouvel opéra en un acte : un conte universel aux couleurs mobiles, où le flux de la musique épouse celui de la vie ; une fable initiatique sur la nature humaine et la découverte de soi. Il retrouve pour la quatrième fois son fidèle Martin Crimp ; Daniel Jeanneteau et Marie-Christine Soma assurent la mise en scène – avec une installation vidéo de Hicham Berrada. Le compositeur dirige cinq jeunes chanteurs magnifiques, Marianne Crebassa en tête, et le Mahler Chamber Orchestra, qui fête à cette occasion ses vingt-cinq ans.

An ordinary day, a terrible event. When her infant dies, a woman sets out in search of the miracle that will bring her back to life. All she has to do, in the space of a day, is find a genuinely happy human being. But while each encounter, however promising, ends in disappointment, she ends up turning to the mysterious Zabelle, host and creator of a marvelous garden. Eleven years after the historic success of Written on Skin, George Benjamin returns to the Festival for a new one-act opera: a universal tale with moving colors, where the flow of music marries that of life; an initiatory fable about human nature and self-discovery. He finds for the fourth time his faithful Martin Crimp; Daniel Jeanneteau and Marie-Christine Soma are directing – with a video installation by Hicham Berrada. The composer conducts five magnificent young singers, led by Marianne Crebassa, and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary on this occasion.
