After the acclaimed premiere at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées Paris in spring 2017, we are now looking forward to nine performances of Pelléas et Mélisande at our house. The opera was awarded the Grand Prix de la Critique in France. Éric Ruf, general director of the Comédie-Française, is in charge of staging, and he also designed the lavish stage design. The French fashion designer Christian Lacroix is ​​responsible for the magnificent costumes. Ilse Eerens, who most recently delighted audiences in Klagenfurt as Pamina in Mozart's Magic Flute , can be heard as Mélisande, while Jonathan McGovern sings the role of Pelléas. Chief Conductor Nicholas Carter will conduct the music.
A tender girl sitting weeping by a well in the forest; a ring falling into a well at noon; a horse that throws off its rider at the same time - Maurice Maeterlinck's fin-de-siècle drama Pelléas et Mélisande , which premiered in 1893, confronts the viewer with symbolic images, the meaning of which only slowly emerges as the story progresses. In his only opera, which premiered in 1902, Claude Debussy composed subtle yet extraordinarily colorful music to Maeterlinck's text. Avoiding any pathos, she gives the symbols space to unfold their power with sensitive restraint.
