Sensationeller Passionsfund

Es ist in zweierlei Hinsicht ein sensationeller Fund, den Gunar Letzbor mit der Passion des Komponisten und Augustiner-Chorherren Franz Joseph Aumann in den Archiven des Stiftes St. Florian und weiterer Klöster gemacht hat. Denn nicht nur entdeckte er mit diesem Oratorium de Passione Domini nostri Jesu Christi ein phantastisch expressives Werk aus frühklassischer Zeit wieder, sondern er stieß damit auch, anders als es der lateinische Titel vermuten lässt, auf die einzige bislang bekannte und erhaltene katholische Passionskomposition in deutscher Sprache.

Das rund 80-minütige Werk ist aber noch aus einem anderen Grund außergewöhnlich: Diese Passionsmusik erzählt nämlich nicht wie gewohnt den Leidensweg Christi nach, ihre Stimmungsbilder und Betrachtungen gelten vielmehr der emotionalen Bewältigung des Unfassbaren: dem bereits erfolgten Kreuzestod Jesu.

Die große Aumann-Passion kam wahrscheinlich am Karfreitag im Stift St. Florian zur Aufführung. Die Musik erinnert an Kompositionen von Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach oder auch Joseph Haydns Die sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze. Gewagte harmonische Wendungen steigern immer wieder den Ausdruck, imposante, von den vier Solisten gesungene Chorsätze und komplexe Fugen lassen das Leiden Christi und die Trauer der Gläubigen auf eindrückliche Weise Klang werden. Ein Werk also, dessen neuzeitliche Erstaufführung ein denkwürdiges Ereignis zu werden verspricht.

Sensational passion find

In two respects it is a sensational find that Gunar Letzbor made with the passion of the composer and Augustinian canon Franz Joseph Aumann in the archives of the St. Florian monastery and other monasteries. Not only did he rediscover a fantastically expressive work from the early classical period with this oratorio de Passione Domini nostri Jesu Christi, but he also came across, contrary to what the Latin title might suggest, the only known and surviving Catholic Passion composition in German .

The approximately 80-minute work is also exceptional for another reason: this passion music does not narrate the suffering of Christ as usual, its atmospheric images and reflections are more about the emotional coping with the incomprehensible: the death of Jesus on the cross that has already taken place.

The great Aumann Passion was probably performed on Good Friday in St. Florian Abbey. The music is reminiscent of compositions by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach or Joseph Haydn's The Seven Last Words of Our Redeemer on the Cross. Daring harmonic turns increase the expression again and again, imposing choral movements sung by the four soloists and complex fugues let the suffering of Christ and the grief of the believers sound in an impressive way. A work, then, whose modern premiere promises to be a memorable event.
