"Soon we'll be singing!" - Countertenor Carlo Vistoli in one of the greatest, painfully beautiful and tragic love stories in opera: The power of music overcomes death in the name of love. After his success with Jules Massenet's fairy tale opera Cendrillon , the Italian star director Damiano Michieletto is returning to the Komische Oper Berlin with a classic of the operatic repertoire.

With the all-enchanting power of his song, Orpheus succeeds in appeasing the hosts of the underworld and wresting the beloved Eurydice from Hades. Now, on punishment for her final death, he is not allowed to look at Eurydice on the way back to life. Tormented by the desire for a look from the beloved, Eurydice asks Orpheus for a proof of love until he finally dares the fatal look back ...

On the basis of the metamorphosesof the classical and ancient poet Ovid, Christoph Willibald Gluck and his librettist Ranieri de 'Calzabigi created a new version of a subject on the threshold between the Baroque and Classical periods, which was already used as a template for several works at the beginning of the opera genre, including Claudio Monteverdi's first opera, had served. This is hardly surprising, since the focus of the myth is on the song itself: art, music and song are able to overcome the horrors of death in the name of love.
