To kick off his tenure, new Music Director Andris Nelsons conducts the Boston Symphony Orchestra at this gala event. Nelson's wife, the celebrated Latvian soprano Kristine Opolais and the outstanding German tenor Jonas Kaufmann, will perform a selection from Wagnerian and Italian verismo.

The concert appropriately begins with Wagner's Tannhauser Overture - the work that initially inspired the five-year-old Nelson to pursue a life in music - and ends with Respighi's spectacular symphonic poem "Pine of Rome".

A special feature lies in the exciting, new collaboration between conductor and orchestra, as well as in the program selection, in which highlights include Wagner's Prelude and Liebestod from "Tristan und Isolde" and the Intermezzo from Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana.
