In the wake of Aida , in full glory, Verdi was deeply affected by the death of the poet A. Manzoni in 1873. Hero of the Risorgimento , the Messa da Requiem is dedicated to him. Verdi offered it to the city of Milan and it was created in the church of San Marco for the anniversary of Manzoni's death. Monumental, it aroused enthusiasm and immediately figured among the absolute masterpieces.

Verdi was reproached for having written an "opera in ecclesiastical dress"! But a Requiem may well be a sacred text – it is the only libretto that Verdi will not modify – it is also a reflection on death… like his operas! It is hardly surprising that certain scenes can create dread ( Dies Irae ), that others meditate ( Requiem aeternam ), express a sadness tinged with hope ( Lacrimosa ) or implore ( Libera me )! Verdi's religious style is no different from that of opera, but it is no less sincere. It bears witness to the existential questions of a man who lets his heart speak. The text of the Requiem offers all the expressive possibilities and allows this agnostic to share with us his vision of human destiny.

Under the baton of their appointed Principal Conductor, Speranza Scappucci , the Choir – reinforced by the IMEP Choir – and the Orchestra of our house will join forces with high-flying soloists to make this concert an exceptional moment. .

Dans la foulée d’Aida, en pleine gloire, Verdi fut profondément affecté par le décès du poète A. Manzoni en 1873. Héros du Risorgimento, la Messa da Requiem lui est dédiée. Verdi l’offrit à la ville de Milan et on la créa à l’église San Marco pour l’anniversaire de la disparition de Manzoni. Monumentale, elle suscita l’enthousiasme et figura d’emblée au rang des chefs-d’œuvre absolus.

On reprocha bien à Verdi d’avoir écrit un « opéra en robe ecclésiastique » ! Mais un Requiem a beau être un texte sacré – c’est le seul livret que Verdi ne modifiera pas – il est aussi une réflexion sur la mort … comme ses opéras ! Il n’est guère étonnant que certaines scènes puissent créer l’effroi (Dies Irae), que d’autres méditent (Requiem aeternam), expriment une tristesse teintée d’espoir (Lacrymosa) ou implorent (Libera me) ! Le style religieux de Verdi n’est pas différent de celui de l’opéra mais il n’est pas moins sincère. Il témoigne des interrogations existentielles d’un homme qui laisse parler son cœur. Le texte du Requiem offre toutes les possibilités expressives et permet, à cet agnostique, de nous faire part de sa vision du destin humain.

Sous la baguette de leur Chef Principal attitré, Speranza Scappucci, le Chœur – renforcé par le Choeur de l’IMEP – et l’Orchestre de notre maison s’allieront à des solistes de haut vol pour faire de ce concert un moment d’exception.
