Medea è il capolavoro del compositore fiorentino Luigi Cherubini, scritta su libretto in francese di François-Benoît Hoffmann (poi tradotta in italiano nella versione di Carlo Zangarini). L'opera venne rappresentata per la prima volta al Théâtre Feydeau di Parigi nel 1797. Basato sull'omonima tragedia di Euripide, rievoca il mito della maga tradita da Giasone che ucciderà i propri figli accecata dalla vendetta. Famosa in Italia soprattutto per le interpretazioni leggendarie di Maria Callas nel ruolo della protagonista, venne rappresentata a Sassari nel 2004 in prima assoluta per la Sardegna. La difficilissima ed estenuante parte, in quella occasione, fu interpretata da Denia Mazzola Gavazzeni, a Sassari già protagonista della Turandot di Busoni, della Voix Humaine e della Navarraise.

Medea is the masterpiece of the Florentine composer Luigi Cherubini, written on a libretto in French by François-Benoît Hoffmann (later translated into Italian in the version by Carlo Zangarini). The work was performed for the first time at the Théâtre Feydeau in Paris in 1797. Based on the tragedy of the same name by Euripides, it evokes the myth of the sorceress betrayed by Jason who will kill her own children blinded by her revenge. Famous in Italy especially for the legendary interpretations of Maria Callas in the role of the protagonist, it was staged in Sassari in 2004 as a world premiere for Sardinia. The very difficult and exhausting part, on that occasion, was interpreted by Denia Mazzola Gavazzeni, in Sassari already protagonist of Turandot di Busoni, Voix Humaineand Navarraise.
