After so many years of being prevented by the privilege of the opera held by Lully, from performing anything other than pastorals and religious music, Charpentier finally reached the stage of the Opera, at the age of 50. He had already conquered the public with his Malade Imaginaire , a comedy-ballet produced with Molière twenty years earlier. Médée represented the "great work" of Charpentier, the culmination of all his work on the voice, an exceptional example of orchestral richness, a drama magnificently experienced thanks to the libretto by Thomas Corneille, the tragic and devouring destiny of Médée: a conductor hard work! However, the reception given to this Medeaby the Parisians was not up to the task, not “fashionable” enough… and Charpentier definitively gave up confronting the cabals which were already making the Opera the site of all the plots! Médée therefore remained Charpentier's only lyrical tragedy, and still leaves regret today all those he could have written if fate, politics and Lully had decided otherwise (Sources: Center de musique baroque de Versailles).

Après tant d'années à être empêché par le privilège de l'opéra détenu par Lully, de faire jouer autre chose que des pastorales et de la musique religieuse, Charpentier accéda enfin à la scène de l'Opéra, à 50 ans. Il avait déjà conquis le public avec son Malade Imaginaire, comédie-ballet réalisée avec Molière vingt ans auparavant. Médée représenta le "grand œuvre" de Charpentier, l'aboutissement de tout son travail sur la voix, un exemple exceptionnel de richesse orchestrale, un drame magnifiquement vécu grâce au livret de Thomas Corneille, le destin tragique et dévorant de Médée : un chef-d’œuvre ! Cependant l'accueil réservé à cette Médée par les Parisiens ne fut pas à la hauteur de l'œuvre, pas assez "à la mode"… et Charpentier renonça définitivement à affronter les cabales qui faisaient déjà de l'Opéra le lieu de tous les complots ! Médée resta donc l'unique tragédie lyrique de Charpentier, et laisse encore aujourd'hui regretter toutes celles qu'il aurait pu écrire si le destin, la politique et Lully en avaient décidé autrement (Sources : Centre de musique baroque de Versailles).
