Tchaikovsky's romantic opera "Mazeppa" is full of ominous, mad love, political entanglements and bloodthirsty cruelty: Maria rejects the young applicant Andrei because she loves the much older Cossack leader Mazeppa. Against her father's wishes, she leaves the family to spend her life with Mazeppa. Her father swears vengeance, causing one fatal misfortune after another.
