An opera in two acts from 1835, libretto by Giuseppe Bardari (1817–1861) based on the 1800 Italian translation of Friedrich Schiller's (1759–1805) play of the same name.

The performance of Anna Boleyn in 2013 marked the beginning of a three-part cycle of opera works about the lives of British queens written by bel canto composer Gaetano Donizetti.

The plot of Maria Stuart's opera focuses on the struggle between the authoritative English Queen Elizabeth I of the Tudor family and the spirited Scottish Queen Mary Stuart, whose life ends on the gallows. The work is literally interwoven with effective arias and dramatic situations, but the historical fact remains that the two queens never actually met.

Opera o dvou jednáních z roku 1835, libreto Giuseppe Bardari (1817–1861) podle italského překladu stejnojmenného dramatu Friedricha Schillera (1759–1805) z roku 1800.

Uvedením díla Anna Bolena (Anna Boleynová) v roce 2013 byl zahájen třídílný cyklus operních děl o životních osudech britských panovnic z pera belcantového skladatele Gaetana Donizettiho.

Děj opery Maria Stuarda se soustředí na boj mezi autoritativní anglickou královnou Alžbětou I. z rodu Tudorovců a temperamentní skotskou královnou Marií Stuartovnou, jejíž život je ukončen na popravišti. Dílo je doslova protkáno efektními áriemi i dramatickými situacemi, historickým faktem však zůstává, že obě královny se ve skutečnosti nikdy nesetkaly.
