Summoned by a ghost, the lost voice of María appears in person through a crack in the asphalt: "I am María... María Tango, María of the suburbs, María night, María fatale passion, María of the love of Buenos Aires am I!"

She roams through the suburbs in the direction of Buenos Aires, unsteady, as if in a frenzy: when she finally arrives in the Argentine city, María can be herself: she chats, recalls her childhood, relaxed and liberated.

Guided by the sounds of tango music, she lands in the underworld between "whore mothers and thieves": There she is murdered, her identity and her memories extinguished.
María now walks through the night more than a shadow...

María de Buenos Aires composed Astor Piazzolla in 1968. It was his first and remained his only opera: a declaration of love for the tango and also for Buenos Aires, his hometown.

More of a musical mood painting than a scenic spectacle:
intimate, intense, quiet and touching.

Heraufbeschworen durch einen Geist erscheint die verlorene Stimme Marías leibhaftig durch einen Riss im Asphalt: „Ich bin María… María Tango, María der Vorstadt, María Nacht, María fatale Leidenschaft, María der Liebe zu Buenos Aires bin ich!“

Sie streift durch die Vorstadt in Richtung Buenos Aires, unstet, wie im Taumel: In der argentinischen Großstadt schließlich angelangt, kann María ganz sie selbst sein: Sie plaudert, erinnert an ihre Kindheit, gelöst und befreit.

Geleitet von den Klängen der Tangomusik landet sie in der Unterwelt zwischen „Hurenmüttern und Dieben“: Dort wird sie ermordet, ihre Identität und ihre Erinnerungen erlöschen.
María wandelt nun mehr als Schatten durch die Nacht …

María de Buenos Aires komponierte Astor Piazzolla 1968. Es war seine erste und blieb seine einzige Oper: eine Liebeserklärung an den Tango und auch an Buenos Aires, seine Heimatstadt.
