Parce qu’elle s’est éprise du tzigane Manru, la jeune Ulana est répudiée par son père et rejetée par son village. Mais l’amour d’Ulana et Manru devra faire face à bien d'autres embûches : il devra résister à l’appel de la vie nomade qui est plus fort que tout et qui menace leur quiétude familiale... Cette histoire d’amour impossible et universelle, entre deux êtres issus de communautés hostiles, vaut parfois à Manru d’être qualifié de “Carmen polonais”.

Son compositeur Ignacy Jan Paderewski a connu un destin exceptionnel : virtuose comptant parmi les plus grands pianistes de son temps, il s’est installé un temps aux États-Unis avant de revenir en Pologne à l’issue de la Première Guerre mondiale, prenant la tête du gouvernement dans un pays en pleine reconstruction.

Manru, son unique opéra, fut créé à Dresde en 1901 avant que, l’année suivante, le Metropolitan Opera ne lui ouvre à New York les portes d’une reconnaissance internationale. En dehors de la Pologne, l’œuvre a par la suite connu une longue éclipse des plus injustes, avant de revenir lentement mais sûrement dans les programmations lyriques.

Cette nouvelle production - coproduite par l’Opéra de Halle - présente, pour la première fois depuis 120 ans, l'œuvre en allemand, la langue originale de sa création. La jeune metteuse en scène Katharina Kastening voit dans Manru un drame d'une lucidité impitoyable sur l’échec des utopies et la fin des grandes idées romantiques dans une société en proie à la haine. Elle pose la question, hélas brûlante d’actualité, des origines de la haine entre les peuples.

When she fell in love with the gypsy Manru, the young Ulana is repudiated by her father and rejected by her village. But the love of Ulana and Manru will have to face many other pitfalls: he will have to resist the call of nomadic life which is stronger than anything and which threatens their family tranquility... This love story impossible and universal, between two people from hostile communities, sometimes earned Manru the title of “Polish Carmen”.

Its composer Ignacy Jan Paderewski had an exceptional destiny: a virtuoso, one of the greatest pianists of his time, he settled for a time in the United States before returning to Poland at the end of the First World War, taking the head of government in a country undergoing reconstruction.

Manru, his only opera, was premiered in Dresden in 1901 before, the following year, the Metropolitan Opera opened the doors to international recognition for him in New York. Outside Poland, the work subsequently experienced a long and unfair eclipse, before slowly but surely returning to opera programming.

This new production - co-produced by the Halle Opera - presents, for the first time in 120 years, the work in German, the original language of its premiere. The young director Katharina Kastening sees in Manru a drama of ruthless lucidity about the failure of utopias and the end of great romantic ideas in a society plagued by hatred. It raises the question, alas burning topicality, of the origins of hatred between peoples.
