„Manon Lescaut” to opowieść rozpięta pomiędzy nadmiarem a brakiem. Nad librettem opery pracowało aż siedem osób: Ruggero Leoncavallo, Marco Praga, Giuseppe Giacosa, Domenico Oliva, Luigi Illica, a także sam kompozytor – Giacomo Puccini oraz jego wydawca, Giulio Ricordi. Przypadek był na tyle skomplikowany, że zdecydowano się nie umieszczać żadnego nazwiska na stronie tytułowej partytury. Siódemka może i jest szczęśliwą liczbą, ale szczęścia tytułowej bohaterce nie przyniosła, a jedynie podkreśliła jeszcze bardziej jej złożony i niełatwy charakter. 

Piękna Manon waha się pomiędzy posiadaniem a brakiem. Między miłością a umiłowaniem luksusu. Co posiada, to zaraz traci. Opływając w dobra, dusi się dostatkiem i tęskni za ubogim kochankiem. Gdy ma z nim odejść, nie potrafi rozstać się z klejnotami. To pożądanie prowadzi ją z luksusu do miejsca, w którym nie ma nic – na pustynię, gdzie umiera z pragnienia. Nie ma wody, ale jest miłość – jedni powiedzieliby – nic, inni – wszystko. 

P.S. Dobra rada… Puccini porusza najbardziej zatwardziałe serca – paczka chusteczek wskazana.

Manon Lescaut protracts between excess and absence. The libretto had been created by seven persons altogether: Ruggero Leoncavallo, Marco Praga, Giuseppe Giacosa, Domenico Oliva, Luigi Illica, as well as Giacomo Puccini himself and his publisher Giulio Ricordi. The case was so complicated that a decision was made not to put any name on the title page of the published score. The protagonist herself is also fluctuating between possession and lack thereof. Whatever she has, she loses in a flash. When she has everything, she feels suffocated with the abundance and recalls her indigent lover. When she is to leave with him, she is unable to give up her jewels. This desire leads her from luxury to a place where there is nothing – to the desert, where Manon dies of thirst. There is no water but there is love; some would say – nothing, others – everything.
