Composed by Giacomo Puccini, whose 100-year anniversary of his death is commemorated in 2024, Madama Butterfly tells the tragic tale of Cio-Cio-San, a Japanese geisha, who marries an American naval officer, Lieutenant Pinkerton. Pinkerton, viewing the marriage as an adventure, leaves after the wedding, promising to return. The three-act opera explores themes of love, betrayal, cultural clash and the sacrifices made in the name of trust and hope. Led by renowned director Maria Todaro, this production presents a linear and elegant telling of the ageless story of faithfulness, perseverance and honor, all relatable virtues that stand the test of time.
