In the mists of medieval Scotland, a deep love blossoms between Lucia and Edgardo. But it is a love that must not be, because Lucia and Edgardo belong to deadly hostile families, similar to Romeo and Juliet in Verona. In order to save the existence of his family clan, Lucia's brother Enrico Ashton wants to marry her off to the influential Lord Arturo Bucklaw. Only after a forged letter accusing Edgardo of being unfaithful to his beloved Lucia did she agree to marry Arturo – a fatal decision with bloody consequences. On the wedding night, Lucia kills her newly wed husband and succumbs to madness, which leads to her and ultimately Edgardo's death.

A climate of longing and mysticism prevails in Lucia di Lammermoor, the tragic main work by Gaetano Donizetti and at the same time the prototype of Italian romantic opera par excellence. Since the premiere in 1835, the opera audience has been gripped by an eerily beautiful feeling at the latest when Lucia, who has gone mad because of abused feelings, staggers bloodstained in front of the party and with the words "Il dolce suono mi colpì di sua voce!" - "The sweet sound of his voice hit me!” intones one of the most famous arias, which to this day is one of the absolute greatest moments of bel canto and after more than forty years can finally be experienced again in Osnabrück.
