For our next opera premiere, Claudio Monteverdi's "L'Orfeo", face masks based on antique models are currently being made in the mask department. Make-up artist Simon Vennekamp shows the process step by step. You can see the result from April 28th.

Gesang als Ausdruck des Lebens und Überlebens: Kaum ein Mythos behandelt dies so deutlich wie die Orpheus-Geschichte. Und kaum ein Werk rührt so sehr an den Urgrund dieser menschlichen Erfahrung wie Claudio Monteverdis Vertonung des Mythos, mit der der italienische Komponist um 1600 die Gattung Oper miterfand. Denn Orpheus hat Kräfte, die anderen Menschen versagt sind: Wenn er singt, halten die Tiere inne und horchen auf, er kann sprichwörtlich Steine erweichen. Und er schafft es gar, die Unterwelt zu betreten, jenen verbotenen Ort, zu dem nur die Toten Zutritt haben. Von dort darf er seine Geliebte Eurydike zurückzuholen, die inmitten der Hochzeitsvorbereitungen ums Leben kam. Doch Orpheus, dem jedes Glück versprochen war, der alles hatte, alles konnte, scheitert – und muss mit dem Scheitern weiterleben …

Die Regisseurin Silvia Costa und ihr Team zeigen mit L’Orfeo die brutale Geschichte einer großen Liebe: brutal, weil Orpheus nicht über den Tod seiner Geliebten hinwegkommt, weil er sich sehnt und verzehrt und sich in den Feedback-Schlaufen des Verlusts verliert. In oftmals surrealen Bildern zeigt Costa, deren Inszenierungen und Installationen inzwischen europaweit gefeiert werden, die Welt des kalten Entzugs: einen rätselhaften Reigen aus Träumen und Halluzinationen, aus Farben und Symbolen. Dirigiert wird Monteverdis sinnliches Frühwerk von dem Barock-Spezialisten David Bates, der in Hannover bereits Trionfo. Vier letzte Nächte glanzvoll zum Leben erweckt hat.

Singing as an expression of life and survival: Hardly any other myth shows this as clearly as the story of Orpheus. And there is hardly any other work that touches the foundations of this human experience as closely as Claudio Monteverdi’s musical version of this myth, which was one of the pieces that helped to invent the genre of opera around the year 1600. Orpheus has powers that elude other humans: When he sings, the animals stop and listen; he can literally melt stone. And he even manages to enter the underworld, this forbidden place that only the dead are allowed in. He has permission to bring back his beloved Eurydice who died in the middle of their wedding preparations. But Orpheus, who was promised every happiness, who had everything and was capable of everything, fails – and has to live on with this failure ...

Director Silvia Costa and her team present the cruel story of a great love in L’Orfeo: cruel, because Orpheus cannot get over the death of his beloved, because he longs and yearns for her and loses himself in feedback-loops of loss. In often surreal images, Costa, whose productions and installations are celebrated across Europe, shows the world of cold turkey withdrawal: an enigmatic round-dance of dreams and hallucinations, of colours and symbols. Monteverdi’s sensual early work will be conducted by Baroque-specialist David Bates, who previously brought Trionfo. Vier letzte Nächte to splendid life in Hanover.
