Orientalist painting celebrated triumphs in the salons; Félicien David's ode “The Desert” had just proclaimed the distant zones of the French colonial empire as a source of musical inspiration. The 25-year-old Georges Bizet was also infected and elicited one of his most attractive works from the exoticism of the time: «Les Pêcheurs de perles», his first full-length opera. However, after the premiere in 1863, the critics were not particularly friendly with the composer and accused him of imitating Verdi, Wagner and Gounod. Only Hector Berlioz recognized the richness of the opera in its own right: "'Les Pêcheurs de perles' is the greatest honor to Bizet, and the score contains arias and duets full of fire and a great wealth of colors." Although some numbers - in particular the friendship duet between Nadir and Zurga and Nadir's romance made famous by Enrico Caruso - have achieved great popularity, “Die Perlenfischer” has remained a rarity in the operatic landscape. The story, set in the Ceylonese milieu, thematizes the human being at the mercy of the forces of nature and the power of his feelings. Under the musical direction of Carlo Rizzi, Malin Hartelius can be heard as priestess Leila, who is committed to chastity, as well as Javier Camarena as Nadir and Carlos Álvarez as Zurga. The team Jens-Daniel Herzog and Mathis Neidhardt are responsible for the scenic implementation, who have repeatedly snatched rarely performed works from oblivion and brought them onto the stage in an impressive manner.
