In Barrie Kosky's bizarre production of Les Contes d'Hoffmann , the eponymous artist gets lost in a disturbing nightmare of his own fantasies. In Hoffmann's exaggerated feelings, Mozart's Don Giovanni becomes the starting point for a mad journey through bizarre worlds; the idolatrous admiration for the singer of Donna Anna always gives birth to new images of women: the soulless doll Olympia, the terminally ill singer Antonia, the heartless courtesan Giulietta. Persecuted by his own demons, there is no way back for Hoffmann into reality. "Deadly blackness, glaring entertainment are balanced: a crazy, confused Hoffmann spectacle, perfectly served." [FAZ]
