Nemorino discovers “Una furtiva lagrima” in the corner of his beloved Adina's eye; a furtive tear that gives him hope that the rich landowner is not as hard-hearted as she is after all. Fortunately, the seedy quack Dulcamara sold him a love potion for his last money, which is supposed to give him irresistible charm. The charm of Donizetti's “L'elisir d'amore” lies in the juxtaposition of hilarious and tenderly romantic scenes, in the permanent alternation of perspectives and atmospheres that hold Donizetti's music together with the melodic richness of bel canto, which is the reason for the continued success of this opera

Una furtiva lagrima entdeckt Nemorino im Augenwinkel seiner Angebeteten Adina; eine verstohlene Träne, die ihm Hoffnung macht, dass die reiche Gutsbesitzerin doch nicht so hartherzig ist, wie sie sich gibt. Zum Glück hat ihm der zwielichtige Quacksalber Dulcamara für sein letztes Geld einen Liebestrank verkauft, der ihm unwiderstehlichen Charme verleihen soll. Der Charme von Donizettis „L’elisir d‘amore“ liegt im Nebeneinander von urkomischen und zart-romantischen Szenen, im permanenten Wechsel von Perspektiven und Atmosphären, die Donizettis Musik mit dem melodischen Reichtum des Belcanto zusammenhält, der den anhaltenden Erfolg dieser Oper begründet.
