If La Vergine dei dolori , a major score by the prolific Alessandro Scarlatti, was a great success when it was premiered in 1717, it is because of its obvious musical richness, combining arias filled with emotion, particularly expressive recitatives and accompaniments by a noble sobriety. Drawing this pearl from oblivion, Rinaldo Alessandrini gives it a deep mystical breath, illustrated — like a tableau vivant — by Ingrid von Wantoch Rekowski.
