"La Vedova Allegra": Die lustige Witwe

The operetta game is never to take yourself seriously. In a world that is increasingly virtual and increasingly devoid of irony, since the filter of distance suppresses human expressions, rediscovering the immediacy and panache of light opera is certainly a unique opportunity. But to take full advantage of these titles, you need to deeply understand their style: this form is often downgraded to a B-series genre, without directly linking it to noble ancestors such as the comic opera and the SingspielGerman. Compared to comic theatre, however, operetta has something extra. Being the youngest daughter of the melodrama, she has the advantage of being able to observe the entire previous production with detachment: like the latest arrivals in the family, she can afford to make fun of her grandparents and uncles without arousing resentment, almost without the victims notice. Thus, the comedian of operetta must not arise from any means, but from the freedom to exaggerate all the theatrical conventions of previous centuries: serious opera thrives on codes that seem ridiculous off the stage, while operetta plays with the same expedients proving to us that they are actually truer than we think.

This staging of the Merry Widow , who is the princess of operettas, therefore wants to demonstrate the beauty and charm of the elegant emptiness of frivolity, without renouncing to show the depth of a delicate and complex world. A journey partly dreamed of and partly regretted, between the melancholy and the grotesque, between the surreal and the everyday. Between the ridiculous and the sublime there is only one step, it is said: the Merry Widow is the living example.

Il gioco dell’operetta è non prendersi mai sul serio. In un mondo sempre più virtuale e sempre più privo di ironia, giacché il filtro della distanza sopprime le espressioni umane, riscoprire l’immediatezza e il brio dell’opera leggera è di sicuro un’occasione unica.  Ma per approfittare a pieno di questi titoli, bisogna capirne profondamente lo stile: spesso si declassa questa forma ad un genere di serie B, senza collegarla direttamente ad antenati nobili quali l’opera buffa e il Singspiel tedesco. Rispetto al teatro comico, l’operetta ha tuttavia una marcia in più. Essendo la figlia più giovane del melodramma, ha il vantaggio di poter osservare con distacco tutta la produzione precedente: come gli ultimi arrivati in famiglia, può permettersi di prendere in giro nonni e zii senza suscitare risentimenti, senza quasi che le vittime se ne accorgano. Così, il comico dell’operetta non deve nascere da mezzi qualunque, bensì dalla libertà di esagerare tutte le convenzioni teatrali dei secoli precedenti: l’opera seria vive di codici che fuori dal palcoscenico sembrano ridicoli, mentre l’operetta gioca con gli stessi espedienti dimostrandoci che in realtà sono più veri di quanto non si creda.

Questa messa in scena della Vedova allegra, che è la principessa delle operette, vuole quindi dimostrare la bellezza e lo charme dell’elegante vacuità della frivolezza, senza rinunciare a mostrare la profondità di un mondo delicato e complesso. Un viaggio un po’ sognato e un po’ rimpianto, al limite fra il malinconico e il grottesco, fra il surreale e il quotidiano. Tra il ridicolo e il sublime non v’è che un passo, si dice: la Vedova allegra ne è l’esempio vivente.
