【La Traviata】Hello from our Cast - Mario Chang

La Traviata (“The Fallen Woman”) is a touching yet tragic love story, which is nevertheless also an indictment of social prejudice and sexism of the 1800s. The work is the only one of Verdi’s operas set in what was the composer’s “present day” and looks forward to verismo operas of the end of the 19th century. La Traviata is the third of Verdi’s great trio of operas, following Rigoletto and Il Trovatore , which cemented him as Italy’s greatest, if not the world’s, greatest composer.

Violetta is an elegant Parisian courtesan. She and Alfredo fall in love and embark on a happy affair, much to the disapproval of Alfredo’s father. Alfredo’s faith is broken, and he behaves abominably; even his father is ashamed. Destitute, Violetta dies from tuberculosis, a disease that she had been quietly suffering from. She dies in the arms of the now penitent and reconciled father and son.

《茶花女》（墮落的女人）是一個既感人又悲壯的愛情故事，同時也是向十九世紀社會對階級和性別歧視的控訴。

這部作品是威爾第唯一一部背景設定在作曲家身處時代的歌劇，更前瞻了十九世紀末的真實主義歌劇。《茶花女》是威爾第三大歌劇中的第三部作品，僅隨於《弄臣》和《遊唱詩人》，奠定了他作為意大利最偉大作曲家的地位。

優雅的薇奧列達是一個巴黎的名妓，她和阿菲度墜入愛河，可是這段剛萌芽的戀情，卻為阿菲度的父親反對了。阿菲度因而氣憤萬分，行為變得異常可鄙，更令他的父親蒙羞。最後，患上肺結核而且一貧如洗的薇奧列達默默在向她和解和懺悔的父子懷抱中殞命……
