In the world of luxury and venality in which the title heroine Violetta moves, love is not foreseen. Moved by her feelings for Alfredo and her approaching death, she tries to make the right decisions. Giuseppe Verdi focused his opera on a young woman who seems to have strayed from the right path.

When he adapted Alexandre Dumas' novel The Lady of the Camellias , published in 1848, for the opera stage, Verdi took up themes of the day with noble prostitution, social upheavals and tuberculosis. In it, the French writer immortalized the fate of the courtesan Marie Duplessis, who died in Paris in 1847. This reference to the present was not common in the music theater of that time and already points to the realism of the late 19th century. The special quality of the Traviata lies in the tragedy of everyday life, which in Verdi finds clear and touching tones. Soon after the first performance in 1853, which was received with restraint, the work began a triumphal procession around the world that continues to this day.
