The swallow, La rondine, premiered in Monte Carlo in 1927, remains Puccini's lesser-known work from his mature phase. Puccini completed the score to a libretto by Giuseppe Ademi in 1916 after two years of work, and it was premiered at the Salle Garnier in Monte Carlo on March 27, 1917. The opera was originally commissioned by the Vienna Karltheater; however, the outbreak of the First World War prevented the premiere from taking place there. The publisher Ricordi, then headed by Giulio's son Tito, refused to publish the score of the opera, labeling it as a bad Lehar. Their rival, Lorenzo Sonzogno, took the score and arranged the first performance in neutral Monaco. Puccini continued to work on revising this, his least known mature opera, until his death. The Swallow was initially conceived as an operetta, but Puccini eliminated the spoken dialogue, making the work closer to opera in form.a continuous fabric of rapturous waltz melodies, catchy pop-style melodies and nostalgic love music , and characterized the action as a recycling of characters and events from works such as La Traviata and Šišmiš.

Lastavica, La rondine, praizvedena u Monte Carlu 1927., ostala je manje poznato Puccinijevo djelo iz zrele faze. Puccini je partituru na libreto Giuseppea Ademija dovršio 1916. poslije dvije godine rada, a praizvedena je u Salle Garnier u Monte Carlu 27.ožujka 1917. Operu je izvorno naručio bečki Karltheater; međutim, izbijanje Prvog svjetskog rata spriječilo je da se premijera tamo i održi. Izdavač Ricordi, na čelu kojega je tada Giulijev sin Tito, odbio je izdati partituru opere, etiketirajući je kao lošega Lehara. Njihov suparnik, Lorenzo Sonzogno, uzeo je partituru i dogovorio prvu izvedbu u neutralnome Monacu. Puccini je nastavio raditi na reviziji ove, svoje najmanje poznate zrele opere, sve do svoje smrti. Lastavica je u početku bila zamišljena kao opereta, ali je Puccini eliminirao govorni dijalog, čineći djelo oblikom bliže operi. Jedan od suvremenih recenzenata opisao je djelo kao kontinuiranu tkaninu ushićenih melodija valcera, privlačnih melodija u pop stilu i nostalgične ljubavne glazbe, a radnju okarakterizirao kao recikliranje likova i događaja iz djela poput Traviate i Šišmiša.
