Bach is especially known for two great passions, the St. John Passion and the St. Matthew Passion. The St. Matthew Passion with its two choirs and two orchestras is the largest. But make no mistake. The St. John's Passion is just as poignant in its short dramatic and concentrated form. In its day, the Passion of John was part of the Good Friday service with the purpose of telling the story of Jesus' suffering, the capture in Gethsemane, the denial of Peter, the presentation to the high priests, the crucifixion and the burial. Finally, the passion is rounded off with a choral epilogue about salvation and resurrection.

Bach er især kendt for to store passioner, Johannespassionen og Matthæuspassionen. Matthæuspassionen med sine to kor og to orkestre er den største. Men tag ikke fejl. Johannespassionen er lige så gribende i sin korte dramatiske og koncentrerede form. I sin samtid var Johannespassionen en del af gudstjenesten Langfredag med det formål at fortælle Jesu lidelseshistorie, tilfangetagelsen i Getsemane, Peters fornægtelse, fremstillingen for ypperstepræsterne, korsfæstelsen og gravlæggelsen. Til slut afrundes passionen med en korepilog om frelse og opstandelse.
