Puccini’s drie gezichten
De drie eenakters verschillen onderling sterk van karakter, setting en verhaalstof, maar hebben een belangrijke gemene deler: de dood. In Il tabarro (De mantel) heeft een ongelukkig schippersechtpaar hun enige kind verloren en is daardoor, met fatale gevolgen, van elkaar verwijderd geraakt. In Suor Angelica is de hoofdpersoon na een buitenechtelijke zwangerschap naar een klooster verbannen, en hoort daar zeven jaar later dat haar zoontje is overleden. In wanhoop pleegt ze zelfmoord, en wordt daarvoor in een stervensvisioen vergeven door de maagd Maria. In Gianni Schicchi sterft een rijke oude man, waarna zijn inhalige familieleden met behulp van de sluwe boer Schicchi de erfenis naar hun hand willen zetten.

 

PUCCINI-JAAR MET GROOTSE ARTIESTEN
In 2024 is het precies honderd jaar geleden dat Giacomo Puccini, bekend om zijn scherpe theatrale instinct en sterke emotionele zeggingskracht, op 66-jarige leeftijd stierf. In dit ‘Puccini-jaar’ presenteert De Nationale Opera daarom het meest veelzijdige werk van de Italiaanse componist, die zich met Il trittico een grootmeester toont in maar liefst drie verschillende genres.

Bariton Michael Volle, die wereldwijd furore maakt als Wotan (Der Ring des Nibelungen), Falstaff (in Verdi’s gelijknamige opera) en Scarpia (Tosca), maakt tegelijkertijd zijn DNO-debuut én twee roldebuten. Als Michele (Il tabarro) en Gianni Schicchi zal hij zich van twee totaal verschillende kanten laten zien: als gekweld verimo-personage en als sluwe komediant. De rol van Suor Angelica, wier lijden niemand onberoerd laat, wordt vertolkt door sopraan Elena Stikhina, die bij DNO eerder een glansrijke invulling gaf aan de titelrol in Madama Butterfly.

Puccini's Three Faces
The three one-act plays differ greatly in character, setting and story material, but have an important common denominator: death. In Il tabarro (The Cloak), an unhappy skipper couple has lost their only child and has become separated from each other, with fatal consequences. In Suor Angelica, the main character is banished to a convent after an out-of-wedlock pregnancy, only to hear there seven years later that her son has died. In desperation, she commits suicide, and is forgiven by the virgin Mary in a vision of death. In Gianni Schicchi, a rich old man dies, after which his greedy relatives, with the help of the cunning farmer Schicchi, want to bend the inheritance to their will.

 

PUCCINI YEAR OF GREAT ARTISTS
In 2024 it will be exactly one hundred years ago that Giacomo Puccini, known for his sharp theatrical instinct and strong emotional expressiveness, died at the age of 66. In this 'Puccini Year', Dutch National Opera is therefore presenting the most versatile work by the Italian composer, who, with Il trittico , proves to be a master in no fewer than three different genres.

Baritone Michael Volle, who is causing a worldwide furore as Wotan ( Der Ring des Nibelungen ), Falstaff (in Verdi's opera of the same name) and Scarpia ( Tosca ), makes his DNO debut and two role debuts at the same time. As Michele ( Il tabarro ) and Gianni Schicchi, he will show himself from two completely different sides: as a tormented verimo character and as a cunning comedian. The role of Suor Angelica, whose suffering leaves no one unmoved, is played by soprano Elena Stikhina, who previously gave a glorious interpretation to the title role in Madama Butterfly at DNO .
