Verdi considered "The Barber" "the most beautiful of all existing comic operas", and Beethoven persuaded the author at a meeting: "The main thing is to write more" Barbers "! It was this opera "The Swan from Pesaro" - as Gioacchino Rossini was called during his lifetime - that became the most popular in Russia.

Meanwhile, her first performance turned out to be one of the infamous curiosities in the history of music: the reception from the public was more than modest. The premiere took place at the Rome theater "Argentina" on February 20, 1816. Her failure was provided by fans of the venerable composer Giovanni Paisiello, the author of a great many operas, including a work called The Barber of Seville. There was such a rumble in the hall, mixed with a loud deliberate cough, that the composer could not stand it and left the theater without waiting for the end of the performance. But Rossini, wanting to show his respect to his senior colleague, even changed the name. Initially, his "Barber" was called "Almaviva, or Vain Precaution." True, he soon acquired the name under which he was destined to win the love of music lovers all over the world.

The basis for the libretto was the play of the same name by Pierre-Auguste Beaumarchais. It differs little from the vaudeville plots of the French theater of that time and, perhaps, would have been completely forgotten if not for the creation of Rossini. The plot is simple. To retell it, Beaumarchais himself needed two phrases: “The old man [Doctor Bartolo] in love is going to marry his pupil [Rosina] tomorrow. Her young admirer [Count Almaviva], as more dexterous, is ahead of him and on the same day is married legally under the very nose of his guardian in his own house. But everyone knows very well that the story could have ended differently if Figaro, a former count's valet who turned barber, had not been nearby. He invents many tricks and risky tricks that allow the Count to meet Rosina and achieve his desired goal.

However, any comic opera is a tough nut to crack for directors. How do you get the audience to be really funny? In the Bolshoi, this problem was solved repeatedly. The history of the Bolshoi Theater knows thirteen productions, among which the famous parody comedy performance The Barber of Seville, invented in 1923 by conductor Nikolai Golovanov, director Vladimir Lossky and set designer Fyodor Fyodorovsky, is especially famous. All female parts were performed by men, all male parts were performed by women. So, the great Antonina Nezhdanova sang Count Almaviva.

But this is a bright, but out of the ordinary episode. As a rule, in the old productions, directing went into the background, music was in the first place. In different years this opera was conducted by Vasily Nebolsin, Samuil Samosud, Kirill Kondrashin, Boris Khaikin... And the best vocal forces of the opera troupe sang. (There is a famous recording of 1952 in Russian with the All-Union Radio Orchestra (conductor - S. Samosud), in which all the then stars of the Bolshoi took part - Ivan Kozlovsky, Vera Firsova, Ivan Burlak, Mark Reizen).

It's impossible to argue with Rossini - so says Evgeny Pisarev, a recognized theater comedian and author of the current production at the Bolshoi. In his opinion, this story is so light and fantasy that he simply “did not dare” to take it seriously.

With his light hand, the Bolshoi plays The Barber of Seville in a playful manner, for which the “theater within the theater” technique has been adopted. The action takes place in two spaces. The first is the "stage", a stylized theater from the time of Beaumarchais, a space "choreographic" and literally sublime. Below is the “behind the scenes”, designed as a modern theater. While the artists are in a mundane, "domestic" space, they behave like ordinary people. Someone is sitting in a tracksuit, someone is being made up, someone is being examined by a doctor ... But going up to the “stage”, they put on other, theatrical, costumes, change their plasticity and the way they communicate with each other. And everything that then happens on the "stage" - dramatic or comedic, this is already a "real theater" (in the theater), frank buffoonery, commedia dell'arte, including, of course,

Между тем, ее первое исполнение обернулось одним из печально знаменитых в истории музыки курьезов: прием у публики оказался более чем скромным. Премьера состоялась в римском театре «Арджентина» 20 февраля 1816 года. Неуспех ей обеспечили поклонники маститого композитора Джованни Паизиелло, автору великого множества опер, в том числе и сочинения под названием «Севильский цирюльник». В зале стоял такой гул, смешанный с громким нарочитым кашлем, что композитор не выдержал и покинул театр, не дожидаясь окончания представления. А ведь Россини, желая выказать старшему коллеге свое уважение, даже изменил название. Первоначально его «Цирюльник» именовался «Альмавива, или Тщетная предосторожность». Правда, уже вскоре обрел то название, под которым ему суждено было завоевать любовь меломанов всего мира.

Основой для либретто послужила одноименная пьеса Пьера Огюста Бомарше. Она мало отличается от водевильных сюжетов французского театра того времени и, возможно, была бы полностью забыта, если бы не творение Россини. Сюжет прост. Чтобы пересказать его, самому Бомарше хватило двух фраз: «Влюбленный старик [Доктор Бартоло] собирается завтра жениться на своей воспитаннице [Розине]. Юный ее поклонник [Граф Альмавива], как более ловкий, опережает его и в тот же день сочетается законным браком под самым носом опекуна у него же в доме». Но всем очень хорошо известно, что история могла бы закончиться иначе, не окажись поблизости Фигаро, бывший графский камердинер, переквалифицировавшийся в цирюльника. Он изобретает множество уловок и рискованных трюков, которые позволяют графу встретиться с Розиной и достичь желаемой цели.

Однако любая комическая опера представляет собой «крепкий орешек» для постановщиков. Как добиться того, чтобы зрителю было по-настоящему смешно? В Большом эту задачу решали неоднократно. Тринадцать постановок знает история Большого театра, среди которых особенно прославилось знаменитое пародийное комедийное представление «Севильский цирюльник дыбом», придуманное в 1923 году дирижером Николаем Головановым, режиссером Владимиром Лосским и сценографом Федором Федоровским. Все женские партии исполняли мужчины, все мужские – женщины. Так, великая Антонина Нежданова пела Графа Альмавиву.

Но это пусть яркий, однако выходящий из ряда вон эпизод. Как правило, в старых постановках режиссура уходила на второй план, на первом была музыка. В разные годы этой оперой дирижировали Василий Небольсин, Самуил Самосуд, Кирилл Кондрашин, Борис Хайкин… И пели лучшие вокальные силы оперной труппы. (Существует знаменитая запись 1952 года на русском языке с оркестром Всесоюзного радио (дирижер – С. Самосуд), в которой приняли участие все тогдашние звезды Большого – Иван Козловский, Вера Фирсова, Иван Бурлак, Марк Рейзен).

С Россини спорить невозможно – так считает Евгений Писарев, признанный театральный комедиограф и автор ныне идущей постановки в Большом. По его мнению, эта история настолько легкая и фантазийная, что ставить ее всерьез он просто «не рискнул».

С его легкой руки Большой играет «Севильского цирюльника» в шутливом ключе, для чего на вооружение взят прием «театр в театре». Действие разворачивается в двух пространствах. Первое — это «сцена», стилизованный театр времен Бомарше, пространство «хореографическое» и в буквальном смысле — возвышенное. Ниже расположено «закулисье», решенное как театр современный. Пока артисты находятся в приземленном, «бытовом» пространстве, они ведут себя как обычные люди. Кто-то сидит в спортивном костюме, кого-то гримируют, кого-то осматривает врач… Но поднимаясь на «подмостки», они надевают другие, театральные, костюмы, меняют пластику и способ общения друг с другом. И все, что затем происходит на «сцене» — драматическое или комедийное, это уже и есть «настоящий театр» (в театре), откровенная буффонада, комедия дель арте, в том числе, конечно, и на реальной сцене Большого.
