The first edition of the score was completed in 1866. Verdi wrote Don Carlo for Paris and had to obey the genre requirements of the French "grand opera". The premiere took place on the 11th of March 1867, and the first alterations were already taking place: part of the music was cut, and ballet was added in the third act. Subsequently, the composer reworked the music many times. In 1872, the premiere of the "Naples" version of the opera took place, and the last, "Modena" version appeared in 1886. The four-act "Milan" version, which was released in 1884, is performed more often than the others.

Don Carlo refers to the mature period of Verdi's work and marks the transition from the violent bubbling up of emotions in La Traviata, Rigoletto and Il Trovatore to the deep psychologism of his later works. The libretto is based on the drama of the same name by Friedrich Schiller, whose work Verdi has repeatedly addressed before (Giovanna d'Arco, I masnadieri, Luisa Miller). The work of Schiller, like that of Hugo and Shakespeare, was one of the examples of dramatic mastery to Verdi, and he fully realized his aspirations in Don Carlo.

The figure of the Spanish Infante and his fate have attracted many authors since the 17th century. Gradually, the real character of the sickly and unbalanced Carlo gave way to his literary counterpart, who acquired the features of a noble lover and defender of the oppressed. This is how the title character of Verdi's opera appears before us. The combination of romantic pathos and close attention to the inner world of the heroes, the richness of melodies and timbre colors, brought Don Carlo wide popularity.

The opera was first performed at the Bolshoi Theatre on November 2, 1876 by the Italian troupe under the baton of the conductor Enrico Bevignani, after which Don Carlo dropped out of the repertoire for a long time. The next time he appeared on the playbill of the theatre on the initiative of Feodor Chaliapin. On February 10, 1917, in the sole performance taking place, King Philip was played by Chaliapin, Don Carlo – Andrei Labinsky, Elizabeth – Ksenia Derzhinskaya, Grand Inquisitor – Vasily Petrov. The production was staged by Pyotr Olenin, designed by Konstantin Korovin, and conducted by Emil Cooper. The third production was staged in the year of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Verdi and premiered on October 25, 1963. The performance, directed by Iosif Tumanov and designed by Vadim Ryndin, remained in the repertoire for twenty-five years. The premiere was conducted by Assen Najdenow (Bulgaria), later Yuri Simonov, Vasily Nebolsin, Mark Ermler, Alexander Lazarev and others were at the conductor's stand. Over the years, the brightest stars of the Bolshoi – Ivan Petrov, Alexander Ognivtsev, Alexander Vedernikov, Evgeny Nesterenko, Artur Eisen (Philip II), Zurab Andjaparidze, Vladimir Ivanovsky, Vladimir Atlantov (Don Carlo), Tamara Milashkina, Tatiana Tugarinova, Eleonora Andreeva, Galina Kalinina (Elisabeth of Valois), Irina Arkhipova, Larisa Avdeeva, Elena Obraztsova, Galina Borisova (Princess Eboli).

In honor of the bicentennial of Verdi's birth, a new reading of Don Carlo at the Bolshoi was offered by the famous British director Adrian Noble. He directed the Royal Shakespeare Company for 13 years, and is the author of How to Play Shakespeare. He has been nominated more than twenty times for the prestigious British Laurence Olivier Theater Award, but is also well known as a musical theater director. Noble collaborated with the Glyndebourne Festival, the Aix-en-Provence Opera Festival, the Metropolitan Opera and La Scala, the Vienna State Opera, and others.

The set design was created by Tobias Hoheisel, a German artist who gained fame for his bold ideas, subtle flair and accurate fit to the image. The costumes were designed by the young German artist Moritz Junge, who is actively working in dramatic theater, as well as in opera and ballet.

The production team set out to recreate the world of 16th century Spain on stage, that is, to tell the story “as it is”, without modernizing anything and letting the action unfold where and when it unfolds in Schiller and Verdi. Indeed, according to Adrian Noble, great works speak to us directly through the centuries. “And the story that at one time attracted one of the “main” romantics - Schiller, and then Verdi - the first composer of the Risorgimento, is still relevant today. Both Schiller and Verdi consider the problem of the state and personality, politics and human freedom. In Don Carlo, there is a thirst for freedom and the spirit of rebellion is in the air".
