Weinberg completed the opera based on Dostoevsky's novel, his last opera, in 1986. The premiere of the edition for a small performing cast took place in 1991 on the stage of the Chamber Musical Theater, which is now part of the Bolshoi. The production was carried out by the artistic director of the Chamber Theater, the great director Boris Pokrovsky. The world premiere of the full stage version took place at the National Theater Mannheim (Germany) almost twenty-five years later, in 2013. The current production of the Bolshoi - worked on by the famous Polish conductor Michal Klauza and the director and teacher, founder of the world-famous Israeli Gesher Theater Evgeniy Arie - was released in 2017 on the New Stage of the Bolshoi Theater and became a landmark event in the cultural life of the country.

Throughout the 20th century, Dostoevsky's philosophically rich, dynamic and expressive prose aroused the composer's keenest interest. Starting with “The Christmas Tree” by Vladimir Rebikov and “The Player” by Sergei Prokofiev, almost all of the writer’s novels and stories were embodied in the opera genre. Thus, the novel “The Idiot,” in addition to Weinberg’s composition, gave rise to the opera “Nastasya Filippovna” by Valerian Bogdanov-Berezovsky and “NFB” by Vladimir Kobekin, Yuri Butsko and Gleb Sedelnikov wrote the chamber operas “White Nights” and “Poor People,” respectively. Foreign composers also turned to Dostoevsky’s work—Leoš Janáček’s last composition for the musical theater was his famous opera “From the House of the Dead.”

Mieczysław Weinberg left the same name as the literary source. The main character could not help but become a semantic dominant, since he is internally close both to the composer personally and to the main theme of his work. In the emotional structure of Weinberg’s music there is indeed much that is akin to Dostoevsky’s hero. This is spiritual kindness, enthusiasm, wise love for a person.

The figure of Prince Myshkin, in whose person the writer intended to portray “a completely wonderful person,” has always and at all times been a mysterious center of attraction, but has caused ambiguous assessments and even controversy. According to stage director Evgeniy Arie, the main character of both the novel and the opera is more of an “anti-hero of our time.” In his opinion, Myshkin is an absurd, weak character... and a genius, because he is capable of empathy. He feels another person's pain as if he has no skin. Usually the definition of “idiot” is perceived as a metaphor. But Evgeny Arie argues differently. He sees a person put in order, cured, or rather, as if cured. It’s not for nothing that both the novel and the opera begin with arrival. The hero arrives and immediately finds himself drawn into a tangle of passions. And this story ends with him being absolutely psychologically destroyed. The action takes place between these two poles.

The libretto of the opera was created in collaboration with the famous musicologist Alexander Medvedev. His acquaintance with Mieczyslaw Weinberg took place thanks to Dmitry Shostakovich and resulted in joint work. They started with the opera "The Passenger", and then Medvedev became a permanent librettist - and a close friend of the composer. The scale of Dostoevsky’s novel dictated the format of a “grand opera” to the authors. Its original volume - four acts, ten scenes and more than three hours of music (208 minutes of “pure” sound!) - is hardly commensurate with modern operatic reality (that is, it is hardly within the capabilities of a modern viewer). As a consequence, when it comes to stage production, opera inevitably undergoes cuts.

The text of the libretto follows the plot of the novel, accurately preserving the original sequence of events. And the “digressions” made are dictated by the very laws of the opera genre. The authors select the most striking episodes of the novel and leave only the main characters: the opera has twelve characters, three mimic roles, and a male choir is involved. Some of the paintings accumulate the events of different chapters, freely combining cues that sound throughout the entire chapter in the novel. Reflections “from the author” of the novel, representing a “free adaptation” of Dostoevsky’s prose, are given to Prince Myshkin and are heard in his two extended monologues.

A striking dramatic solution to the opera performance was the special organization of the stage space provided by the composer and the author of the libretto. As stated in the note to the score, “the action of the opera is carried out on three stages located on the main stage. Events on each of them occur separately, with instantaneous transitions.”

This cinematic technique becomes a kind of “calling card”, and the composer uses it masterfully. Which is not surprising, given his vast experience in cinema. Weinberg wrote music for more than sixty films, including the world-famous film “The Cranes Are Flying” and “The Last Inch,” which was very popular in the Soviet Union. The technique of “instant transitions” - essentially very simple, but effective - allows you to concentrate the action, sharpen a number of situations by direct comparison, and “collide” different ideas and their bearers.

Mieczysław Weinberg cared little about the performance of his compositions. He sincerely believed: “If a real opera is born, it will always find people who will listen to it with pleasure, who will need it.” The opera “The Idiot,” despite its modest history of productions, is distinguished by a wide variety of director’s interpretations and stage adaptations.

Оперу по роману Достоевского – свою последнюю оперу – Вайнберг закончил в 1986 году. Премьера редакции для небольшого исполнительского состава состоялась в 1991 году на сцене Камерного музыкального театра, который ныне является частью Большого. Постановку осуществил художественный руководитель Камерного театра, великий режиссер Борис Покровский. Мировая премьера полноценной сценической версии прошла в Национальном театре Мангейма (Германия) почти двадцать пять лет спустя, в 2013 году. Нынешняя постановка Большого – над ней работали известный польский дирижер Михал Клауза и режиссер и педагог, основатель всемирно знаменитого израильского театра «Гешер» Евгений Арье – увидела свет в 2017 году на Новой сцене Большого театра и стала знаковым событием в культурной жизни страны.

На протяжении всего XX столетия философски насыщенная, динамичная и экспрессивная проза Достоевского вызывала живейший композиторский интерес. Начиная с «Елки» Владимира Ребикова и «Игрока» Сергея Прокофьева, в оперном жанре получили воплощение почти все романы и повести писателя. Так, роман «Идиот», помимо сочинения Вайнберга, вызвал к жизни оперы «Настасья Филипповна» Валериана Богданова-Березовского и «НФБ» Владимира Кобекина, Юрий Буцко и Глеб Седельников написали камерные оперы «Белые ночи» и «Бедные люди» соответственно. Обращались к творчеству Достоевского и зарубежные композиторы – последним сочинением Леоша Яначека для музыкального театра стала его знаменитая опера «Из мертвого дома».

Мечислав Вайнберг оставил то же название, что и у литературного первоисточника. Главный герой не мог не стать смысловой доминантой, поскольку внутренне близок и лично композитору, и основной теме его творчества. В эмоциональном строе музыки Вайнберга действительно много родственного герою Достоевского. Это душевная доброта, восторженность, мудрая любовь к человеку.

Фигура Князя Мышкина, в лице которого писатель имел намерение изобразить «вполне прекрасного человека», всегда и во все времена являлась загадочным центром притяжения, но вызывала неоднозначные оценки и даже споры. По мнению режиссера-постановщика Евгения Арье, главный герой и романа, и оперы является скорее «антигероем нашего времени». По его мнению, Мышкин – персонаж нелепый, слабый… и гениальный, потому что способен к эмпатии. Он чувствует боль другого человека так, будто у него нет кожи. Обычно определение «идиот» воспринимается как метафора. Но Евгений Арье рассуждает иначе. Ему видится приведенный в порядок, вылеченный, а точнее, как бы вылеченный человек. Недаром и роман, и опера начинаются с приезда. Герой приезжает – и сразу же оказывается вовлечен в клубок страстей. А заканчивается эта история тем, что он абсолютно психологически уничтожен. Между этими двумя полюсами и разворачивается действие.

Либретто оперы создавалось в соавторстве с известным музыковедом Александром Медведевым. Его знакомство с Мечиславом Вайнбергом состоялось благодаря Дмитрию Шостаковичу и вылилось в совместную работу. Начали они с оперы «Пассажирка», а затем Медведев стал уже постоянным либреттистом – и близким другом композитора. Масштаб романа Достоевского диктовал авторам формат «большой оперы». Ее первоначальный объем — четыре действия, десять картин и более трех часов музыки (208 минут «чистого» звучания!) — едва ли соразмерен современной оперной реальности (то есть едва ли по силам современному зрителю). Как следствие, когда дело доходит до постановки на сцене, опера неизбежно подвергается сокращениям.

Текст либретто следует за фабулой романа, точно сохраняя изначальную последовательность событий. А сделанные «отступления» продиктованы самими законами оперного жанра. Авторы выбирают наиболее яркие эпизоды романа и оставляют только главных персонажей: в опере двенадцать действующих лиц, три мимические роли и задействован мужской хор. Часть картин аккумулирует события разных глав, свободно сочетая реплики, в романе звучащие в рамках целой главы. Размышления «от автора» романа, представляя собой «вольную обработку» прозы Достоевского, отданы Князю Мышкину и звучат в двух его развернутых монологах.

Ярким драматургическим решением оперного спектакля стала особая организация сценического пространства, предусмотренная композитором и автором либретто. Как указано в примечании к клавиру, «действие оперы вынесено на три площадки, размещенные на основной сцене. События на каждой из них происходят обособленно, с мгновенными переходами».

Этот кинематографический прием становится своего рода «визитной карточкой», и пользуется композитор им мастерски. Что неудивительно, если вспомнить о его огромном опыте работы в кинематографе. Вайнберг написал музыку более чем к шестидесяти кинофильмам, среди которых всемирно известная картина «Летят журавли» и очень популярный в Советском Союзе «Последний дюйм». Прием «мгновенных переходов» — по сути своей очень простой, но эффектный — позволяет сконцентрировать действие, заострить ряд ситуаций их прямым сопоставлением, «столкнуть» различные идеи и их носителей.

Мечислав Вайнберг мало заботился об исполнении своих сочинений. Он искренне считал: «Если рождается настоящая опера, она всегда найдет людей, которые будут с удовольствием слушать ее, которым она будет необходима». Опера «Идиот», при всей скромной истории его постановок, отличается большим разнообразием режиссерских трактовок и сценических воплощений.
