The Congolese farmers Raisin and Mamadou have lost their cow; she drank the water of the river into which the cobalt mine discharges its sewage. There is no compensation from the mine, so they go to the traditional magician who promises to correct the imbalance, clean up the river and get the farmers back their cow.

Kristine Tornquist has written a libretto with “The Hyena Thirst”, which connects the environmental damage caused by a mining mine with the needs of a Congolese farming family. Raisin's cow dies from contaminated river water. Raisin complains unsuccessfully to the manager of the mining company, which is poisoning the river with its sewage. She turns her request to the magician Mbumba, who takes matters into his own hands. The manager of the mine falls ill with the "thirst of the hyena". The magician reveals the drug to the manager's wife for a high fee: the man has to drink from the river water. The manager has the wastewater treatment plant, which was shut down for profit reasons, switched on. The magician even got a new cow for Raisin. The piece is based on an African fable. The hyena from this fable serves as a symbol for the greed of the people for profit with unrestrained exploitation of all resources. Julia Purgina's music comments, ironises, dresses in almost comic-like speech bubbles. The mixture of wind instruments, strings, percussion and a harpsichord (!) Enables “exotic” sound effects without the aid of African folklore. So the music serves the piece and grows beyond itself in the final narrative of the hyena fable. No virtuoso feats are required of the protagonists in terms of singing, the text is the focus. The characters were musically well sketched - just as Kristine Tornquist's production understood how to use simple means to transform characters into lovable stage personalities in a humorous way. Antanina Kalechyts directed the Ensemble Reconsil. What I particularly liked about this performance was its positive attitude: people make mistakes, but you can turn things around for the better.
