Der Schweiß hat die Locken seiner Perücke ausgewaschen und die Feder rast über das Notenpapier: Johann Sebastian Bach komponiert in kürzester Zeit das Weihnachtsoratorium – und zwar nach einem bewährten Verfahren: „Parodie“ nennt die Musiklehre, was andere als „Plagiat“ aburteilen. Bach zitiert sich selbst, und gut geklaut ist halb gewonnen: Den Beginn seines Oratoriums leiht er bei einer alten Glückwunschkantate und – dem Herrn sei’s getrommelt – der Affekt ist in beiden Kompositionen derselbe: Freude und Jubel! Dieses Bach’sche und weihnachtliche Hochgefühl hat sich seit der Eröffnung des Festspielhauses im Winter 2012 in die DNA der Festspiele eingeschrieben. An dieser Tradition halten wir fest.

The sweat has washed out the curls of his wig and the pen is racing across the music paper: Johann Sebastian Bach composes the Christmas oratorio in a very short space of time - using a tried and tested method: music theory calls "parody" what others condemn as "plagiarism".

 

Bach quotes himself, and a good steal is half the battle: he borrows the beginning of his oratorio from an old congratulatory cantata and – for God's sake – the affect is the same in both compositions: joy and jubilation! This Bachian and Christmassy feeling has been written into the DNA of the festival since the festival hall opened in winter 2012. We hold on to this tradition.
