Besonders dank der Wiederentdeckung seiner effektvollen Opern kennt man Marc-Antoine Charpentier heute nicht mehr nur als Komponisten der »Eurovisionsfanfare«. Sein 1693 uraufgeführter Fünfakter »Médée« – nach einem der großen klassischen griechischen Sagenstoffe – ist allerdings nichts für schwache Gemüter. In diesem Drama fließt das Blut in Strömen, ehe die Titelheldin auf dem Rücken eines Drachens davonfliegt.

Als von ihrem Gatten Jason betrogene Königstochter Médée steigt Magdalena Kožená in den Ring – und präsentiert damit eine ihrer Paraderollen, der sie selbst im größten Rachetaumel noch sanfte Töne zu entlocken weiß.

Mit Carolyn Sampson als Liebesrivalin Créuse und Reinoud Van Mechelen als Jason stehen ihr zwei ebenso Alte-Musik-erfahrene Partner:innen zur Seite wie mit dem Freiburger Barockorchester: seit Jahren steht das Ensemble an der Spitze der so genannten historisch informierten Aufführungspraxis. Dass Sir Simon Rattle und Magdalena Kožená auch privat als Paar harmonieren, dürfte dem künstlerischen Erfolg dieses glanzvollen Opernereignisses ebenfalls nicht im Wege stehen.

Thanks in particular to the rediscovery of his effective operas, Marc-Antoine Charpentier is no longer known only as the composer of the »Eurovision Fanfare«. However, his five-act play »Médée«, which premiered in 1693 and is based on one of the great classical Greek sagas, is not for the faint of heart. Blood flows in this drama before the titular heroine flies away on the back of a dragon.

Magdalena Kožená steps into the ring as the king's daughter Médée, who has been betrayed by her husband Jason - and thus presents one of her signature roles, from which she knows how to elicit gentle tones even in the greatest frenzy of revenge.

With Carolyn Sampson as her love rival Créuse and Reinoud Van Mechelen as Jason, she has two partners who are just as experienced in early music as she is with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra: for years the ensemble has been at the forefront of so-called historically informed performance practice. The fact that Sir Simon Rattle and Magdalena Kožená also harmonize privately as a couple should not stand in the way of the artistic success of this glamorous operatic event.
